ROYAL ENGAGEMENT MADRID UPI — The secretary of Princess Irene of the Netherlands hinted today that the Dutch royal family is ready to announce Irene's engagement to a Spanish nobleman. The blonde, 24-year-old princess prepared to fly home to the Hague to face the national controversy in the Netherlands over her romance and conversion to Roman Catholicism. Her father, Prince Bernhard, was flying from the Netherlands in a royal plane to pick her up. She inwold On Bridge

key: he may be sitting in your own chair. If you paste this warning on the edge of your bridge table you may be able to keep out of the soup kettle. West's double of one heart was for takeout, but his double of four hearts was clearly meant as a rebuke. South had gone out of his mind. West's tone of voice suggested, and he would have to pay for it. West cashed the top clubs and continued with the jack of clubs, forcing South to ruff. Naturally, declarer ruffed with an honor, saving an entry to dummy. The bidding warned South that both diamond honors were behind him. Desperate measures were therefore necessary to prevent the loss of two diamond tricks, l .NNNKSSARY PLAY Aftr ruffing the third club South led his singleton spade and took an “unnecessary” finesse by playing dummy’s queen. The finesse succeeded, just as the bidding indicated, and declarer continued with the ace of spades and a low spade, ruffed by an hour. This series of plays permitted South to strip spades from both hands, just as the first three tricks had stripped the clubs. Only the red suits remained. Declarer cashed the ace of hearts and led his carefully preserved low heart to dummy’s nine. This drew trumps and simultaneously put declarer in dummy for a diamond play. When South next took a finesse with the nine of diamonds, West could win with the queen but could not find a safe return. If West returned a diamond, South would get a free finesse; and if West returned anything else, dummy would discard the losing diamond while South ruffed.

It’s hard to blame West for his double: most players don't double often enough. Still, it was the oduble that led declarer to his successful but desperate line of play. This bid shows 16 to 18 points (this hand counts to 17) with balanced distribution and strength in at least three suits. Some experts would open with one club, fearing to bid notrump with a worthless doubleton.

RIPS LBJ—Senator Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) ponders a question asked by newsmen during a press conference in Chicago after his arrival to attend a $100-a-plate Lincoln Day dinner attended by 3,000 Republican wellwishers. Before a cheering, wildly enthusiastic crowd Goldwater accused the Johnson administration of twisting the water supply emergency at the Guantanamo naval base to make it seem a U.S. victory over Fidel Castro. He demanded that this country use force to keep the water flowing into the huge base from the Cuban waterworks.
