Senators Whittle On Tax Measure WASHINGTON UPI — Senators working on the administration’s $11.6 billion tax cut bill told the single girl and the bachelor today that two can live more cheaply than one. The Senate rejected a proposal that would have allowed single men and women over the age of 35 to qualify in the “head of household” income tax category. Sen. Russell B. Long, D-La.,

said such a move would simply encourage bachelors to shy from the alter. "This would be a consolation prize to women who have never had a serious marriage proposal from a good marf,” Long complained. But the Senate approved tentatively another plan to broaden the present tax category for “head of household." It would allow those ^who contribute at least half the support of a dependent to qualify under this category even though they may not live in the same home with such a dependent.

IN MEMORY’ In memory of Pamela Jean Brattain. When we look at heaven. We can almost see her there. Sitting on a cloud. Floating in the air. She was a little Angel, We borrowed for awhile; She had the cutest ways. And a very winning smile. Her memories are big, And she was so small; But Jesus called her to him, And she answered his call. Sadly missed by Mommy, Daddy, Marsha. Marshall and Kent.

Sheinwold On Bridge Hold Up Trump Ace Even Without Reason It’s possible to get some very good results without knowing exactly what you’re doing. For example, when you hold A-x-x of trumps on defense it’s almost always advantageous to refuse the first trump trick. Refuse the trick even if you don’t know why. Declarer won the first trick in dummy with the ace of hearts and returned a trump, playing the king from his hand. West

SLAM WOULD FAIL South would go down at his slam if West refused to win the first trump trick. If declarer led a second trump, West could take the ace and return a third trump. This would limit South to one diamond ruff in a dummy. If declarer abandoned trumps after the first round in order to make sure of ruffing two diamonds in dummy, East would over-ruff with the nine of spades. There can be other advantages in refusing the first trump trick, but it isn’t necessary to work them out. Unless you can think of a reason to wan the first trump trick play a low trump and go on from there. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one dia-

couldn’t think of a reason for refusing the trick, poor fellow, so he took the ace of trumps. West returned a heart, and South ruffed with the ten. Declarer cashed the ace of diamonds, in dummy, and led a trump back to his hand. This drew East’s remaining trump, so that South could safely ruff another diamond in dummy. Declarer returned to his hand with a club and drew the last trump. Then he coulG casii the king of diamonds and run the rest of the tricks with good diamonds and the ace of clubs.
