Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Miss Yochum is employed at The Bonita Beauty Salon in Vincennes, Indiana. Mr. Cunningham is employed as Assistant Terminal Manager at Motor Freight Corporation in Greencastle, Ind. No date has been set for the wedding. Alibi Provided For Defendant JACKSON, Miss. UPI — The defense began putting witnesses on the stand in hope of proving that Byron De La Beckwith was nowhere near the scene where Negro leader Medgar Evers was

killed.

Fred Conner, who works for the bus station in Greenwood, Miss., Beckwith's hometown, said he had dinner with Beckwith in Greenwood between 6:30 and 7 p.m. last June 11, the night that Evers was killed shortly after midnight on the 12th. Connor said Beckwith appeared ‘ just as calm as ever." 'The prosecution contends that Beckwith killed Evers about 12:30 a. m., June 12. It is about a 90-minute drive from Greenwood to the spot on the Greenwood-Jackson high-way where Evers was slain. Dist. Atty. Wililam Waller established that Beckwith was a frequent visitor at the Greenwood bus station. An earlier witness had placed him there three nights before the killing. "Wasn't Beckwith a self-ap-pointed patrolman to see that the bus station kept segregated ?

MANILA UPI — Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the old warrior who led one of Asia's first revolts against colonial rule, died peacefully today at the age of 94. A series of strokes and heart attacks finally killed Aguinaldo, the leader of Philippine revolts against Spain and the United States at the turn of the century. He died at Veterans Memorial Hospital in nearby Quezon City, where he had been confined since late last year. Aguinaldo was born of Chinese and Tagalog parentage near Cavite, Luzon. As the dashing young mayor of Cavite Viejo in 1895, he joined a secret revolutionary society dedicated to overthrowing Spanish rule. VOTE ON TIME ISSUE WASHINGTON UPI — Washington, which is on Central Standard Time now, may switch to Eastern. A referendum is being conducted through bills for water and electricity service asking patrons to vote yes or no on whether they favor ‘‘year around fast time.” Officials said the count thus far shows a ‘‘vast majority” voting for Eastern, or “fast,” time.

Neat Swindle Traps Defender

"I fell into a trap the other night,” a fan confesses, wanted to

give my opponent full credit for a very pretty swindle, my wife said I needed a keeper and that any sensible adult would know when he was being flimflammed. South dealer Both sides vulnerable NORTH A A K 9

“I opened the six of hearts from the West hand. Declarer looked at the dummy for quite a while before he played the first card. My partner < my wife, as you might guess) put up the jack of hearts, and declarer won with

the ace.

"South led the ten of spades to dummy’s king and returned the jack of clubs for a finesse. I won with the king of clubs and led the deuce of hearts, expecting my partner to win with the queen and to return the suit. "Much to my surprise, declarer produced the queen of hearts and proceeded to rattle off a total of ten tricks. My wife pointed out that we could have taken ten tricks ourselves if I had shifted to diamonds on winning my club trick. "Does South deserve credit for a fine play, or was I a poor

fish?”

GIVE UFEDIT Give credit where credit is due: South made a very fine pla/ at the first trick. It might have deceived anybody. If South won the first trick with the queen of hearts and then went after a club finesse. West would surely switch to diamonds. When South actually won the first trick with the ace of hearts. West naturally assumed that his partner held the queen. Nevertheless, West should have led the king of hearts after taking the king of clubs. This would be necessary if East had started with the doubleton Q-J of hearts. If East had started with Q-J-x-x of hearts, she would drop the queen when W’est led the king. Actually, East would not drop the queen of hearts on West’s king. West might then work out what was going on and

therefore shift to diamond. In short. South made a beautiful play but a super-alert West might have avoided the trap. West was not a poor fish, but he

certainly got hooked. DAILY QUESTION

Partner opens with one heart, and the next player passes. You hold: S-8 6 5 3 H-J 5 4 D-A Q9 5 2 C-6. What do you say? Answer: Bid two hearts. This is a choice of evils. The spades are too shabby to bid, the hand as a whole is too weak for a response of two diamonds, and the heart support is a trifle short.. Still, the heart raise comes closest to describing the hand.

Mrs. Shumaker Hostess To Delta Kappa Gamma

Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met at the home of Mrs. Julia Shumaker on Saturday

afternoon. February 1.

During the business meeting, conducted by Mrs. Hazel Owens president, announcements were made concerning the March meeting which will celebrate the silver anniversary for Epsilon, and the role of Epsilon in the Delta Kappa Gamma State Convention to be held in Terre

Haute on April 17. 18, 19.

A request was made for a 194445 year book to complete the

president’s file.

In continuing the theme for the year, Changing Patterns in American Culture, Miss Audrey Beatty, program chairman, introduced a panel discussion on Educational Culture. She noted that Putnam County contained a cross section of education from the elementary school through the college level. The panel members representing these various levels were: Miss Louise Knauer, elementary teacher. Mrs. Dorothy McCammon. Junior High School teacher, Mrs. Nancy Walters, panel moderator, High School teacher, and Miss Nelle Barnhart, Associate Dean of Students at DePauw University. A number of trends and problems at each level were discussed, with some possible solutions suggested. It was a most interesting and provocative discussion. Mrs. Edna Boyd was congratulated upon her new book on

Puerto Rico.

The theme carried out in decorations and refreshments was in keeping with February. Assistant hostesses were: Dr. Marian Brock, Miss Ethel Mitchell, Mrs. Charlotte Peterson. Mrs. Minna Mae Rightsell, Mrs. Mary Sanders, Mrs. June Scobee, and Mrs. Bernice Steward.
