South West North East 1 A All Pass Opening lead — A Q Eart passed one spade with a smile on his lips. “They can t make game,” he thought to himself. And he was a good prophet. West opened the queen of clubs, and South took the ace and returned a club for lack of anything better to do. East won and returned the queen of diamonds. South played low on the first diamond but put up the king when East continued with the jack of diamonds. West took the ace and returned a diamond to East’s ten. Now East returned a spade, and the ten lost to West’s jack. Back came the jack of hearts, covered by the king and ace. East led his other spade, and South’s queen lost to the king. CONTINUES HEART West continued with the ten of hearts, and East overtook with the queen in order to cash the South was down four, nine of hearts. West was sure to win another trump trick, and South felt grateful as he entered 400 points for the epponents on the scorepad. If East had doubled. South had no place to go; the damage would have been 1100 points instead of only

400.

An experienced player is not afraid to reopen the bidding when an opening bid of one in a' suit is passed around to him. Once or twice a year, the oppponents have missed a game and will reach it when given a chance.

The rest cf the time the hand belongs to the side that has not yet bid. and it (s up to the player in fourth position to act instead of passing. Fourth hand should double (for takeout) with 11 points or more in high cards, but should bid a suit with slightly less than 11 points.

DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: S-K J P 5 H-J 10 P-A 8 7 tJ-Q J 10 7. What do yoo ? Answer: Bid thiv-a. 'pm?’.. This forcing response shows very strong trump support with 13 to 16 points (counting distribution as well as high cards).
