Fires Kill Three, Damage Is High Fires in Indiana over the weekend killed three children and caused more than $500,000 damage to a shopping center. Indianapolis was hardest hit. The children, Gregory Quisenberry, 7, and his two sisters, Joann, 14, and Lois, 10, were killed before dawn Sunday in an Indianapolis apartment. Hours before, fire swept through a shoe store at the Eastgate Shopping Center on the east side of the Hoosier capital and eight other stores in the complex were damaged by heavy
smoke.
Six fire departments battled a fire at Hymera Sunday afternoon. The flames licked through the Hymera Lumber Co., causing an estimated $30,000 loss, according to owner Harvey Edwards. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

No. 386
Unmistakable signs of marked change in feeling in
the Confederacy multiplied in January 1864. An attempt was made to burn the residence of President Jefferson Davis at Richmond. Open criticism of him in the Southern press
had become repetitious.
The Emancipation Proclamation issued at Washington, applicable only to slaves in those portions of Rebel states held by the Union forces, had its effect in unconquered Richmond. Slaves were running away, or taking over their masters’ homes and property. They held meetings in defiance of laws. Deprived of their usual Negro helpers, with Confederate currency declining in purchase power, and food becoming scarcer at
any price, artisans went on strike. The mayor pleaded for a leak in the roof of City Hall to be fixed before it ruined all plaster and floors. Postoffice employes and other government workers threatened strikes, or indulged in work stoppages for back salary due them or increases in pay, and were attacked in the Confederate press as disloyal. Complaints in the press also made known that numerous men were leaving the Confederacy with whatever valuable possessions they could transport "What are the aiuthorir ties thinking of in granting passports to people to leave the country, where they have been making fortunes . . . shut down the passport gate at once!” one editorial thundered. A meeting of Tennesseans at Nashville declared in favor of drawing up a new state constitution outlawing slavery. Similar action had been taken at Unionh e 1 d New Orleans, and a convention was called to revise the Louisiana constitution to prohibit slavery. —Clark Kinnaird [<-] "The White House of the Confederacy,” or residence of Jefferson Davis, as it appeared at the time of the arson attempt.
JOHNNY HAZARD
DRY RUN—I* appears to be a disaster, but it’s lust a test run of "Lulubelle,” the loco scaphe at Bouveret. Switzerland, which will pull Jacques Piccard’s unique passenger
submarine some 250 feet across the bottom of Lake Geneva. It’s all part of the Swiss National Exposition, but this is just a dry run for the odd 100-ton waterproof steam engine.
