Cargo Plane Is Down In Pacific HONOLULU UPI — Three strong SOS signals spurred hopes today that there might be survivors from the C124 which went down in the Pacific west of the Hawaiian Islands with nine men aboard. Air Force officials reported a confusing pattern of possible SOS signals Thursday afternoon, but three signals were clearly heard Thursday night by the pilot of a military airplane flying the same 2100-mile Wake Island-to-Hawaii route as taken by the ill-fated cargo plane.

Sheinwold On Br idge Deceptive Play Lacks Author By Alfred Sheinwold I'm not really sure who played the hand shown today. Maybe a good reporter would know, but this is one time I prefer not to be a contender for the Pulitzer

This doesn’t help me as much as you might think, since there are two such men at opposite ends of the American continent. The Larry Weiss in Boston is a distinguished and conservative attorney; the Larry Weiss in Los Angeles, an insurance broker. Both are well-known bridge experts. Weiss did a wicked thing at the first trick. He wilfully and maliciously discarded a spade from dummy while winning the first trick with the ace of clubs. The idea was to persuade the opponents that his weakness was spades. Actually, South’s weakness was diamonds, so his play at the first trick was an attempt to tell a fib to the nice opponents. LEADS TRUMP Having committed this wicked act, Weiss led a trump at the second trick. West won and shot back the nine of spades, hurriedly trying to attack declarer's weak point. My notes say that Larry Weiss shook his head sadly at this naive defense. “Tsk, tsk,” he said, but my notes don't reveal whether the accent was Bostonian or California. And Weiss ran his four spnde tricks, discarding two diamonds from the dummy. Then he could give up two diamond tricks and claim the game and rubber. Would a lawyer do a thing like that ? Or would an insurance man? It keeps me awake at night just thinking about it. Will the true Larry Weiss stand up and confess? DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-10 6 H6 D-A Q 4 C-K Q 7 6 5 4 2 What do you say ? Answer: Bid one club. You are a trifle light in high-card strength, but it pays to stretch a point or so when you have a seven-card suit.
