KHRUSHCHEV claims his two-year budget will increase industrial production, solve the fertilizer shortage, provide more income, and increase housing. In the U. S. that would be called a platform, but with no fertilizer shortage. ! ! ! The IrUi-member Soviet parliament okayed Khrushchev’s program without dissent. Each member has a mind of his own, and he wants to keep it there. i t • • • • Khrushchev's plan orders the chemical industry to be trebled. Up to now it's only been troubled. ! ! ! The Republicans didn’t really think they could beat Kennedy
with Goldwater. Now they don’t know who they can beat Goldwater with. ! t t Red China's Premier Chon En-Lui is on a tour to make, friends among Africa’s new nations. With a friend like Red China, they won't need auy enemies. ! ! ! Consumer spending gets a lot of credit for 1963 being a big year. That's because credit gels a lot of consumer spending. ! ! 1 Maybe we’re spending ourselves into prosperity. At least we re not saving ourselves from it.

the West hand is a diamond. South wins, draws three rounds of trumps and begins on spades. Tfie defenders can take their two spades and their diamond trick, and then they are through. The singleton spade lead does defeat the contract, but only if East and West continue with a well-reasoned defense. East is tempted to take both spades and then lead a spade for West to ruff, but this hands Sou ! h his game contract. After West ruffs, he can lead a diamond to force out the ace, but South wins and draws trumps. Then declarer discards two diamonds from dummy on his extra spades, after which he can ruff his low diamond in
