likes.

By HENRY CATHCART Central Press Washington Writer XTTASHINGTON—Some of the more thoughtful members of W fi 16 Washington press corps are encouraged by President Lyndon Johnson's new, informal approach to meeting newsmen. So far, Johnson hasn’t held any formal, pre-announced press conferences, but has called press meetings seemingly on the spur

of the moment.

The first time, he had a ’’coffee hour” with a baker’s dozen of correspondents who happened to be hanging around the White House press room on a Saturday morning. His second meeting was called for some 50 correspondents after they had trooped into Press Secretary Pierre Salinger’s office to attend the regular morning press briefing. On both occasions, Johnson acquitted himself exceedingly well. He spoke fluently and knowledgeably on a wide array of government matters, entered into an air of intimacy with the newsmen, and projected a degree of frankness that was exceptionally pleasing to

his audience.

Johnson appears to want to encourage spontaneity in his press conferences. Unlike those

of his recent predecessors, the television cameras were absent from these first press sessions. Most reporters aren't bom actors and the absence of the all-seeing television eye made for a bet-

ter exchange of ideas and information.

And of no little importance to reporters who usually come to their profession woefully unequipped, the fact that Johnson talks slowly and enunciates clearly makes for more legible note-taking and, consequently, for more accurate news stories.

* • * *

• SECURITY—The assassination of President Kennedy has rightfully made Washington security conscious. The White House limousine has been equipped with bullet-proof steel and glass. When the President travels out of the City, most elaborate police protection is maintained. Even in Washington, Johnson’s movements around the city aren’t announced in advance. And in other large cities, his auto is heavily guarded by motorcycle policemen moving at a fast clip through cleared and blocked-off streets. The uneasiness about security stems unhappily from the demonstrated truism that one act of violence stimulates similar thoughts by other deranged persons. Even the U. S. Supreme Court has tightened up on its protection of the justices, perhaps because of the bitter attacks that. have been leveled against that body by extreme segregationists. Until the assassination, the court's police did not sit in the chamber when the judges were on the bench. Now a police officer in plain clothes sits in front of the courtroom as close to the justices as he can get without being conspicuous.

• • • •

• PICTURE GAI.LERY—President Johnson has completely redecorated his oval White House office, including new’ pictures

on the wall.

Immediately behind his desk are four photographs. Three of them are pictures of former President Eisenhower, the late Speaker Sam Rayburn and the New White

late President Kennedy.

Another is that of a man who looks a lot like

President Johnson. It turned out to be a picture Gallery

of his father, Samuel E. Jolinson Jr.

It also developed that the picture arrangement represented the two men who had the greatest influence in the Presidents life— his father and Rayburn—flanked by the two presidents who immediately preceded him in that oval office.
