She inwold On Bridge This is the time of year to consider the Never-Never Hand. It contains the kind of play that no human hein# is likely to make at the table unless he is told in advance that he is playing a problem hand. West leads the seven of diamonds, and East takes the first two tricks with the queen and ace. East then leads another diamond. and South follows suit. In the ordinary human game. West would ruff with the six of spades, pleased with himself for getting this trick. No matter

what West then returned, declarer could get to dummy for a trump finesse. One finesse would be enough to bring in the rest of the trumps without loss, and South would draw trumps and

run the diamonds.

A very simple hand, and nobody would give it a second

thought.

PAR CONTEST When this hand was played in the Global Par Contest a few weeks ago. West was required to ruff the third diamond with the deuce of spades. This is a very cunning and logical play. East can have only 13 points in high cards outside of spades. Surely, East has at least K-x of spades to justify his opening bid of one no trump.

If declarer over-ruffs with dummy’s four of spades, he cannot take a finesse through East. Therefore East will get a trick with the king of spades, and he can then lead a diamond for West to ruff. This defense will defeat the contract. Very clever, but not clever enough, oou'ti also must count points anil must see exactly what is going on. When West ruffs the third diamond with the deuce of spades, declarer must refuse to over-ruff in the dummy! South gets to dummy to take his normal trump finesse and can draw trumps, making the game

contract.
