hostess details for this beautiful occasion. The business was short; the main business of the evening was the creation of Christmas spirit in the hearts of those present. A moving tribute to the late President Kennedy was read by the chaplin. Miss Lottie Marie Thomas. The program was introduced simply as “Christmas Program by Mrs. Staten Owens.” Mrs. Owens set the mood with a poem after which carols were sung by two fourth grade children, Peggy Eppelheimer and James Palmer. The children sang beautifully and unselfconsciously without accompaniment. James Palmer read an original Christmas story which he had written while a pupil of Mrs. Owens in the third grade. The group sat spellbound as Mrs. Owens read a new and most inspiring Christmas story. Everyone joined in the singing of carols immediately before the hostesses invited them to the dining room where elegant

Foreign Aid Bill Snarl Continues WASHINGTON UPI — House Democratic leaders and President Johnson put on the heat today in an all-out effort to end the foreign aid snarl and ad-

journ the first session of the 88th Congress. The issue was the $3 billion foreign aid mon y bill-specifi-cnlly, an amendment to restrict government underwriting of credit for wheat sales to Russia and other Communist nations. The aid battle stirred up animosity between Democratic and Republican leaders in the House forced Johnson to delay his departure for Texas to spend the

holidays and upset plans for Congress to quit last week. The President’s prestige was clearly on the line and he was in the forefront of the fight. He spent the weekend in White House conferences and on the telephone lining up support for the bill. The administration was determined to get the foreign aid legislation, with an acceptable wheat sales amendment, enacted before Congress adjourns.

The aid bill was the last remaining hurdle to adjournment of the longest continuous session since 1942. Congress can’t quit before Tuesday since the Senate won’t meet again until then. Sunday was a busy day for the First Family. Johnson had hoped to fly to Texas Sunday night, but pressures of the congressional situation forced a change of plans.

Last Of Quints Will Co Home ABERDEEN, S. D. UPI — The last of the famous Fischer quintuplets prepared to leave St. Luke’s Hospital Saturday for a “quiet” Christmas at home — their first. Waiting for little Mary Ann and Mary Catherine were Mom and Dad Fischer and eight brothers and sisters. The two girls were the last of the quints to make the big jump from the hospital nursery, where they have been since their historic birth Sept. 14, to the makeshift nursery in the Fischer’s nineroom rented house. Two cribs were ready for the girls in the bedroom where pacesetter James Andrew and sisters Mary Margaret and Mary Magdalene already are quite at home. The quints were the first to survive in the United States. James Andrew, the only boy quint and largest of the five, went home Nov. 30. The two other girls followed last weekend.

with the nine, so East stepped up with the ten of spades to force out declarer’s king. Now Becker led Ore jack of hearts, completing’ a remarkable end play. If East won the trick, he would have to lead spades from the J-7 to declarer’s A-9. If West stepped up with the ace of hearts to rescue his partner, West would have to lead hearts from the 8-5 to dummy's 10-6. So as it turned out, the slam was a safe contract because dummy had the six of hearts. Change

that card to the five of hearts, and South would have gone down. Very few books on slam bidding will tell you the difference between a six and a livespot. Sheinwold On Bridge Overbid Hand Is Best Of Year My vote for the best hand of 1963 goes to a slam played by B. Jay Becker last month in the United States Team Trials. Becker and his partner were trying to stay out of three notrump because they had no heart stopper. Somehow their cautious bidding landed them in six clubs. West had nine reasons (all bad) for not opening a heart. Somehow he found himself leading a low diamond. Becker discarded another heart on dummy’s last diamond, leaving five cards in each hand. Dummy had two spades and three hearts; declarer and East had four spades and one heart. Becker cashed queen of spades and led dummy’s eight of spades menacingly through East.
