He continues with the queen of hearts, and you hold off once more since you don't know that East started with only two hearts. West leads a third heart, and you take the ace. You see that you can take eight tricks very easily, and that the ninth trick will have to come from diamonds. In order to develop a second diamond trick you must guess the location of the king and jack of diamonds. It’s very easy to make a correct diamond play if you look at all four hands, but not so easy if you can see only the North and South hands. In this case, however, necessity comes to your aid. WEST IS DANGEROUS You simply cannot afford to let West gain the lead because he would ruin you with the rest of the hearts. Still, you cannot keep West out if he has the king of diamonds. Therefore necessity compels you to guess that East has the king of diamonds. This guess establishes the way you must play the hand. After winning the third heart, run the four clubs, ending in your own hand. Then lead the ten of diamonds toward dummy. You hold your breath as you lead the diamond because ’f West has the king he will step up and run the hearts. When West fails to do so. you know that East has the king, just as you hoped. It is safe to play West for the jack of diamonds by letting the ten of diamonds run as a finesse. As it happens. East has the jack of diamonds and wins the trick. He returns a spade to dummy’s ace. and you now lead a diamond through East so that you can win a finesse with the nine of diamonds. This trick assures the game and rubber. You have only 7 points in high cards, so that the combined total is only 23 to 25 points, not enough for game. Avoid complications when you know that game is a poor
