NEIGHBORLY
To build an effective but neighborly fence, you can install pickets on both sides of the fence rail, offsetting the picket on the opposite side. This makes an airy fence but has a substantial look without being solid. Either western red cedar or Douglas fir makes good fencing material. For better rise to cakes, place eggs in warm water for a fey minutes before using them.
For cottons and linens which are white or color-fast, the hotter the suds and rinses the better Warm water is preferable for
non-fast colors.
Wash only one large or two small slipcovers at a time so that sudsy water can circulate freely in the washing machine. If slipcovers are heavily soiled, presoak in warm water and detergent for 10 to 15 minutes before starting the wash cycle.

ARE YOU READY TO INVEST?
An experienced midwestern •tuck broker recently remarked that some people make better Investors than others because ©f the differences in their emotional makeup. How's that again? On the eurface, the remark sounded ©dd, since it came at a time ■when interest in the stock markot is at a peak and more than 17 million Americans — presumably with varying personalities — own shares in publicly held U. S. corporations. But the man has a point. “We all know the type of person who starts to price yachts if his stock happens to advance PO cents a share,” r————— he said. “And at the other extreme, there is the man who is ready to apply for city welfare if his stock goes down 50 cents a Share.” Anybody can »ame a few examples of these extremes. Keeping an eye ©n how your stocks are doing from day to day is both human and intelligent, of course, but there is no reason to become either melancholy or ecstatic about normal market fluctuations. As J. P. Morgan once growled when he was asked the trend of the market, “It will fluctuate.” In a free enterprise system, stock prices are determined by supply and demand — just like prices of almost everything else we buy. As such, they’ll continue to rise and fall according to the opinions of the millions ©f investors who buy and sell securities. In ether words, stock investtnents involve risks as well as rewards. Common stocks do not offer any money-back guarantees, despite what some glib and unscrupulous promoters may say.
An awareness of that blunt truth is the first step in probing a vital question: Are you ready to invest? The second step involves a careful diagnosis of your financial situation. It should be obvious that it’s difficult for someone plagued with money worries to remain calm if stock prices dip. “Every investor,” an experienced broker says, “needs a cushion — savings, government bonds, a cash reserve —■ to guard against unexpected emergencies.” Then a prospective shareowner must give serious thought to his particular investment objectives. Is he looking for higher income? A retirement fund? Funds to help the children through college? No matter whatsortof a program a person needs, it’s important to get the best available advice. And the best advice can be had without cost or obligation from a reputable broker. A broker with a Member Finn of the New York Stock Exchange will give you the benefit of his judgment and experience, along with pertinent information concerning a company or industry in which yon have an interest. By taking a sound approach, an investor will avoid the greatest of all pitfalls: tips and rumors, get-rich-quick schemes, and phony stock brokers. Quite plainly, these are soma ©f the mental and financial aptitude tests you should pass before deciding to join the shareowner family. It is possible, of course, that you might fail the test, for not everyone is necessarily suited to investing in common stocks. But, if you score w ell, ths stock market may offer the investment oppor* tunities you’re looking for.
A NEW source of anxiety was introduced to women when It was suggested that hair spray might be responsible for a strange condition of the
Jungs.
“Thesaurosis”, described technically as a “lung storage" tTsease, was attributed to hair sprays that contained a form of a polyvinyl compound. Because of the wide use of hair sprays, the suggested relationship between this grooming Dr. Coleman product and an irritative lung condUfcn Induced fears and anxieT Tantamount to panic. Extensive Study An extensive study in humans and in animals was undertaken by Dr. Matthew J. Brunner, of Northwestern University School ©f Medicine in Chicago, to definitively prove or disprove any such relationship. Dr. Brunner and his associates concluded from their studies that thesaurosis could not be based on the inhalation of hair spray. These scientists etiid: “In experimental animals, extreme exposure to hair sprays cf different types in high concfntration did not produce pathologic changes in any way suggestive of thesaurosis.” No Proof In view ©f these findings, these researchers further state that they agree with a similar British study which found, too, that there was no conclusive proof that peculiar changes of the lungs were caused by hair
•prays.
These reports should alleviate the tensions of those who have been so fearful of contracting Irritations and inflammations of the lung with tlieso popular
products.

It Is definitely advised that one’s own doctor be consulted for individual advice about the continued use of hair spray, for sometimes an underlying chest ailment may be aggravated, although not necessarily produced, by the irritation of polyvinyl jn hair sprays.

ELECTRONICS FOR THE PARALYZED The hopeless reconciliation of the paralytic to his destiny now seems to be modified by a glimmer of scientific light. The muscles of a paralytic lie dormant and inactive because of the inability of nerves to carry the electrical impulses necessary to activate them. V. an effort to bypass the paralyzed nerves, scientists at the Core Institute of Technology in Cleveland are actively pursuing an exciting concept. 1c is hoped that muscles in the arms and legs will be set in motion by electric stimulation from a soiuxe outside the body.

Families who want an authentically styled Colonial house should take special pains with the entrance—just as the Colonists of Jamestown and Salem
did long ago.
Homes of the very early settlers were purely functional, designed to provide only basic protection against enemies and the elements. However, as the colonists prospered, residents of thriving towns began to build larger, more attractive homes that gave them pleasure as well
as protection.
One area of these homes that clearly received special attention was the main entrance. Skilled carpenters often were called on to outdo themselves in producing outstanding panel doors and distinctive frames from the wood that was plentiful in the area. Gracefully fluted frames as well as painstakingly carved pediments were common. One of the most popular door patterns called for six panels arranged to represent a Cross and
' open Bible. Historians agree that panel doors with the Cross and Bible pattern were once used as charms to protect the inhabitants against witches and other
evil spirits.
It wasn’t too long ago that there were only two ways to get an authentic Colonial door: buy a real antique or have a new one custom-made—noth very expensive. Today, however, this is no longer necessary, since authentic copies of many styles of panel doors and complete entrances are readily available as factorymade units. They are made of durable ponderosa pine in a number of stock sizes, and can be obtained from building materials dealers throughout the country. Precision machining assures an accurate weather-tight fit, and the use of special chemicals adds extra years to the naturally long, useful life of ponderosa pine. Stock wood panel dcxjrs come from the factory sanded and ready for finishing with either . paint, stain or varnish.
