Sheinwold On Bridge Take Your Finesses In The Right Order By Alfred Sheinwold Don't give up just because all the finesses lose. In some hands you may have an extra chance for your contract provided you take your finesses in the right order. South dealer fctot-Wcst vulnerabl® NORTH

This gave South his chance for a finesse, and he lost the ten of di^-.onds to the jack. Back came a trump, and declarer took the ace and queen of hearts. Then he tried a finesse with the queen of diamonds. This lost, and back came a diamond. South won the diamond returned and ruffed a spade in dummy to try the club finesse. West took the setting trick with the king of clubs, and jouth complained that he war the unluckiest bridge player in five count ies. MISSED A CHANCE It's true that South was unlucky. The odds are 7 to 1 against losing three finesses. Still. South missed a chance to make his contract. It was correct to try the first diamond finesse when that was thrust on South by East's lead of the nine or diamonds. But Souths next finesse should be in

clubs.

Even though the queen of clubs loses to the king. South can get rid of a diamond on dummy's jack of club .. If the ten of clubs happens to fall. South can get rid of a second diamond and then will not need another diamond finesse. If the ten of clubs does not happen to fall, there is still time for South to fall back on his second diamond finesse. It can cost nothing to try for the cl'.'os first, and in this case the correct play would give declarer the con-

tract.

DAILY QI ESTIOX Partner opens with one notrump (16 to 18 points i and the next player passes. You hold: SK H-Q 10 8 7 4 P- 6 5 2 CJ 9 7 2. What do you say? Answer: Bid two hearts. Game is very unlikely when you have only 6 points opposite a 16 to 18 point hand. If partner raises, showing 18 points and a fine fit for hearts, you can then go on to game.
