(East hoped his partner had the ten of hearts, for then dummy would be forced to ruff.) South next led the queen of spades. West naturally covered with the king, and dummy's ace won. Declarer returned a low trump from dummy. East played the six and South win with the
jack.
West discarded a heart, and South grunted with disappointment. He still had to lose a trump and a club. The contract was doomed. IMPOSSIBLE FINESSE
What do you say? Answer: Pass or bid one spade. This is a borderline case. You would surely open the bidding if you had a sixth spade, or a singleton, or an additional jack or so; and you might open with this hand if your p inner were very conservative. With most partners you shou'd pass.

THE FACES OF BUSINESS—Important members of the U. S. business community had praise for President Johnson after this meeting with him in the White House, but their expreseions do not seem to quite match. Front, from left: Juan Trippe, Pan American Airways president; Donald David, former Harvard Business School dean; Her».7y Ford, Ford Motor chief; Harold Boeschenstein, Owens Corning head.

"I could have made the contract,” South muttered. "I could have finessed with the seven of trumps.” This was an impossible finesse. There was no way for South to know that East had both the eight and the nine of trumps. That is, there was no way for South to know about the trumps as he played the hand. That s because he made the habitual play of leading the queen of spades for his first trump finesse. Since South had no partner to inform it is not necessary for him to lead the queen of spades. Instead, he should lead the ten of spades. When West has to play the king of spades on declarer's ten, it is possible for South to work out what is going on in trumps. West’s king is almost surely singleton, and declarer must win with the ace and lead trumps twice through East’s 9-8-6 to avoid the loss of a trump trick. 31 Are Awarded Civilian Honors WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson awarded the nation's highest civilian honor Friday to 31 men and women. Then in a dramatic gesture, he conferred it posthumously on the late President John F. Kennedy and Pope John XXIII. Johnson’s announcement that he was adding his assassinated predecessor and the dead pope to the list of winners of the new Presidential Medal of Freedom climaxed a White House ceremony which had been planned by Kennedy. The 31 other winners of the freedom medal had been designated for the honor by Kennedy in recognition of their services and contributions throughout the world. At the ceremony in the state dining room of the White House, the new President had read the citations accompanying the awards to the 31. Then, in emotion-touched voice, he announced that he was similarly honoring Kennedy and the dead pontiff. A hush came over the 200 people assembled for the occasion.
