Reserve forward Dean Rush played 31 minutes of basketball Saturday night and helped engineer DePauws 71-69 victory over Illinois Wesleyan at Bowman Gym. The win was DePauw's first in three games and Wesleyan’s initial loss after whipping MacMtirray in its Friday opener. Tonight DePauw attempts to extend its string, facing Wabash in Crawfordsville at 7:30 p.m. The varsity game will be preceded by a freshman game. Benched after starting in DePauw's two earlier losses. Rush a 6-4 junior, collected 19 points and 10 rebounds and was Johnny-on-the-spot when DePauw needed on the scoreboard. Shortly before the half he hit six consecutive points to ease DePauw out of a 25-24 deficit. Two more Rush baskets before the intermission enabled the Tigers to hang up a 38-38 halftime ticket. His really big heroics came midway in the final 20 minutes. Down 62-56, the Tigers snapped off three straight baskets, two by Rush in 72 seconds. Stan Bahler, starting forward who yielded his post to Rush in the first half, picked up the scoring brunt at this stage. Wesleyan went ahead 63-62 and 65-64, but both times the Wabash (Ind. i sophomore connected for two pointers to recapture the edge for DePauw. Two Rush free throws gave DePauw its permanent lead at the 3:19 mark. Reserve guard Mike Fehling then hit a driving reverse layup to widen the gap to 70-67 with 2:48 left. Wesleyan connected 17 second later to make it 70-69. Rush moved it back to 71-69 with a free throw at the 48 second stop, but he missed the second of the bonus. Wesleyan took the ball but threw it away in the final frantic seconds that included a pair of jump balls with 36 and three seconds to play. Callane misfired on a free throw with only two seconds remaining, but Wesleyan's recovery yielded a shot that missed by 35
feet.
Wesleyan hit .397 to DePauw s .316 and scored three more baskets. DePauw’s margin came on an edge in free throws, 23-15. DePauw captured rebounding honors. 61-54. Besides Rush, the Tigers got 16 points from Morgan Everson and 11 points from Callane. who hit only four of 21 and dropped off from a 28-point a game aver-
age.
Greencastle’s scrapping Tiger Cubs made it four straight foi the season Saturday night when they whipped host Martinsville,
79-68.
Balanced scoring and rebounding were the major factors in the victory over the Arlesians who had defeated a tough Crispus Attucks aggregation on Friday
night.
Coach Dave McCracken’s proteges played well despite the pressure of the Martinsville crowd and continued rallies by Artesian net tossers. The host team led by one point at the quarter, 13-12. The Cubs came back, however, to grab a 34 to 27 advantage at halftime. They made it 57 to 46 at the end of the frame and went on to win by eleven, 79 to 68. Dave York, Phil Cooper, Ron Chadd and Ron Blotch all connected in the double figures for the locals. Kennedy was the big threat for Martinsville, dumping in 31 points, on 11 field goals and nine free throws. This coming Friday, Clinton’s Wildcats will invade the lair of the Tiger Cubs for a Western Indiana Conference game.
