NOW THAT WIGS have becomes so popular with women, a speaker at the National Barber Show in New York suggests this is the time for us males to start wearing false mustaches and ersatz chin whiskers. It had to come—instant beards! ! ! ! Kice thing about these phony facial hairpieces is that a fellow can have any kind of cookie duster or beaver that’ll fit his type of pan. ! ! ! These facial falsies can add to a fellow's ego—leading him to think he looks like John L. Sullivan in his prime or Abe Lincoln at Gettysburg. • t • A good Christmas gift suggestion for the man who has everything else could be a complete set of mustaches—ranging from the tiny misplaced eye-
brow variety, through the me-dium-sized Kaiser Wilhelm spiked job, to the ponderous handle-bar sheriff model, so popular when the West was being won. ! ! I Beards, too, are available in all sizes from the Buffalo Bill goatee all the way to the fullblown Henry Wadsworth Longfellow bramble bush. ! I ! The emergence into popularity of the pseudo mug mattress may not be overnight, but if it happens it'll certainly put a new look on things. ! ! I With bogus beards a fellow may even show how he feels about that big Civil War ruckus back in '61 to ’65 by going around looking like either Robert E. Lee or U. S. Grant at their winningest.

East won the first trick with the ace of spades and started to worry about South's diamonds. He had something to worry about.. A vulnerable overcall at the level of two shows a very good suit, almost always of six or more cards, with over-all strength equal to that of an opening bid. Players who consistently make weaker overcalls don't fade away; they merely die broke. It wasn't hard for East to work out the nature of the South hand: a good six-card diamond suit, the ace of hearts, and a spade stopper. If South got his spade trick, he could run six diamonds and two hearts to make game and rubber. SHIFT THE ATTACK When you can’t win a victory by a frontal assault you may get what you want by shifting the attack. In this case East saw a chance to beat declarer with clubs when he couldn't dig his grave with spades. East cashed the king of clubs at the second trick and then returned the ten of spades. South played the queen, but West was not deceived for a moment. East would have led the jack of spades instead of the ten if he could have done so. West won with the king of spades and returned the jack of clubs, seeing exactly what his partner was aiming at. South was helpless sinfce the opponents had to get three clubs and two spades. It was almost a pleasure to be beaten by such a pretty defense. Almost. DAILY QUESTION With both sides vulnerable, the player to your right bids one spade. You hold: S-6 4 H-K J 10 D K 10 C-Q 8 7 5. What do you say? Answer: Pass. This hand is not good enough for a vulnerable overcall at the level of two. If the opening bid had been one diamond you would overcall with one heart.
