Give I T p Trick To Improve Luck By Alfred Sheinwold “It was a very unlucky hand, - ' South remarked as he scored 100 points on the wrong side of the scorepad. “Both aces were wrong, and the diamonds didn't
break.”

East took the queen of clubs with the ace and returned the jack of clubs to dummy's king. South drew trumps, cashed the top diamonds, and gave up a
diamond.
West won and led a fourth diamond, forcing South to ruff. Declarer tried a spade next, losing the king to East’s ace. The defenders took a second spade, and South was down one. It was true that South ran into bad luck, but he should have made the contract nevertheless. The first two tricks made it clear that East had all the missing high clubs, and this should have provided the clue. Loser On Loser South can assure the contract by a loser-on-loser play. After drawing two rounds of trumps declarer cashes the top diamonds and leads the nine of clubs from dummy. East must step up with the ten of clubs, and South discards his last dia-
mond.
If East has a third diamond to return. South can ruff. And if the diamonds have broken 3-3, South can get to dummy with a trump to discard a spade on dummy's last diamond. Even if East started with four diamonds. South can ruff the third diamond and lead a spade toward dummy's king. It has cost him nothing to try the club play first. As the cards lie. ‘East has only black cards left. If East returns a spade, dummy's king will win a trick; and if East returns a club, dummy ruffs while South discards a spade. Either way, the contract is home. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one heart, and the next player passes. You hold: S-Q 10 863 H-82 D - Q 10 9 5 C 7 2. What do you say? Answer: Pass. Don’t bother to respond when you have only 4 points in high cards unless you have a fine fit for partner's
suit.
