Talented 4-H'ers Earn Honors For Best Projects Learn by doing—a basic principle of the 4-H Club program —paid off handsomely when two Indiana teen-agers put it into practice. Both won trips to the 42nd National 4-H Club Congress Dec. 1-5 in Chicago.

Janis Lindsey, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Lindsey of Columbia City, won top state honors and her trip, sponsored by General Motors, for her work in safety. Paulette LeCount, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul LeCount of Wawaka, topped Indiana in the clothing project, sponsored by Coats & Clark Inc. Miss Lindsey’s interest in safety inspired the members of the Thorncreek 4-H Stars. She used skits, demonstrations and radio programs to encourage them to promote safety in the community. She promoted a fire safety program and assisted homeowners in finding fire and and safety hazards. “I’ve learned that health is man’s most important asset,” she said, “and it must be preserved by safety practices.” Miss LeCount’s award-win-ning skill as a seamstress is evident in the 115 garments she has made at a saving of more than $300 over ready-to-wear garments. “I believe that I will always be able to take care of my clothing needs and those of my family because of my 4-H clothing project,” she said. “My knowledge of clothing fits into home life because there’s always something to patch and new articles to make.” An estimated 718,450 4-H’ers are enrolled in the club’s clothing program; about 532.000 take part in the club’s safety program. according to the Cooperative Extension Service.
Sheinwold On Bridge Bridge Snobbery Ruins Defense The danger of walking with kings is that you may lose the common touch. Walking with
qneens is even worse, to say nothing of jacks. Bridge snobbery is just as bad as any other kind. West opened the three of clubs, and East won with the king. South dropped the ten of clubs. Don’t snicker at this routine false card. It wouldn’t deceive you for a moment, of course, but then you have looked at the hand,
haven't you?
East didn’t like the look of that ten of clubs. He was afraid to lead another club for fear that South had started w.th the single-

That humble card did not appear on the first trick. Why not? If South had the singleton ten of clubs, West had led the three of clubs from a holding of 9-7-3-2. But this is absured, since West would have led the deuce of clubs from any four low cards. Clearly South’s ten of clubs was not a singleton. East could lose nothing by investigating fur-
ther. The ace of clubs would tell East just what to do next. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one heart and the next player passes. You hold: S-2 H-Q 6 5 4 3 2 D-9 S 5 4 2 C 3. What do you say? Answer: Bid four hearts. This shows considerably playing strength but very little in high cards.

ton ten. Instead East returned his singleton diamond. South won, led a heart to dummy and returned the jack of spades for a finesse, East covered with the king of spades and eventually won a trump and two clubs—but these tricks were not enough to defeat the contract. NEEDED RUFF East needed his partner’s club ruff to defeat the contract. He should have continued with the ace of clubs at the second trick, and then with a low club for West
to ruff.
How could East tell what was going on in clubs? It was just a matter of keeping the common
touch.
East was looking so hard at the kings queens, jacks, and tens that he forgot about the lowliest card in the deck—the deuce of clubs.
