A SUDDEN epidemic of Dengue fever in Puerto Rico has affected the health of five to ten thousand inhabitants. Health officials here, supported by equipment and personnel of the U.S. Army Contagious Disease Center in Atlanta, had the disease-bearing mosquito in check within ten days. Dengue fever is caused by a filterable virus which is injected into humans b y the bite of the Aedes Aegypti Dr. Coleman mosquito. This is the same mosquito that disseminates yellow fever. Numerous Names The variety of names given to Dengue fever seems almost inexhaustible. Dandy fever, sandfly fever, breakbone fever, bouquet, giraffe and polka dot fever are but a few of the Imaginative if non-descriptive names. This acute infectious disease occurs about four to ten days after the virus is introduced into the body. Interesting Course The disease has an interesting and characteristic course. For two to three days, fever persists and is accompanied by chills and pains in the joints. Then, suddenly, the temperature drops to normal and patients become aware of a feeling of well-being. After about a day of comfort, the fever returns and almost invariably brings with it a mild skin rash. Fortunately, there are rarely any complications or fatalities associated with this strange dis-
ease.
No Specific Treatment There is no special treatment for Dengue fever. As a symptom arises, it is treated according to the needs of the patient. Rest and simple diet are an important part of the nursing
care.
Epidemics of Dengue fever are controlled by screening buildings with fine mesh wire and by spraying whole communities with DDT. The diligent
destruction of the mosquito Is the aim of the coordinated efforts of epidemiologists and Federal health authorities. The U.S. Public Health Service functions on a constant alert basis to protect the health of its citizens everywhere.

SKIN TEMPERATURE AIDS DIAGNOSIS Contributions to the early diagnosis of disease are frequently the outgrowth of the strangest scientific experimen-
tation.
A physician-photographer, Dr. Jacob Gershon-Cohen, has been taking pictures of the body under odd conditions. He uses a technique first developed by space scientists who, almost unbelievably, were recording the temperatures on the planet
Venus.
Temperature Survey As a result of Dr. GershonCohen’s work, an infra-red camera can now record the temperature of every segment of the body. This aerial temperature survey of the body contributes important information for the diagnosis of some obscure conditions within it. It has been found that some tumors, cancers and other abnormalities of the body actually show slight temperature changes in the overlying skin. The camera demonstrates variations of skin temperature by characteristic light and dark spots on the photographic film. “Photographic Thermometers” These “thermograms” have already become invaluable in the study and differentiation of breast cancer. Special circulatory diseases of the arms and legs, too, are revealed by these “photographic thermometers”. Expanded studies of tnis thermogram technique are being explored for more widespread use in diagnosis. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better under* standing of your mind and body. All the hopeful new advances t» medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
