Shcinwold On Bridge Know The Odds To Play Correctly By Alfred Sheimvold When an opponent goes to a great deal of trouble to lose his contract don't snicker at him. the ace of diamonds and returned a diamond to dummy’s king. Declarer returned a trump from dummy, and East quite naturally played the nine. At this point South could play any of his five spades without revoking. As luck would have it. South played the queen—the only spade that could cost him his contract. West won with the ace of spades, and East later got two more spade tricks. Down one. The odds seemed to be 4 to 1 that South would pick the right spade play, but South went out of his way to make the losing

play.

SELDOM MATTERS In a ^ase of this kind it seldom matters what South does. If the missing four spades are divided 2-2, South will lose two trump tricks no matter how he plays the suit. If West has A-K-J of spades (after East has followed with the nine), South must lo.se three tricks whether he stands on his head or on his

feet.

South’s play matters only if West has a singleton spade. West may have the ace, the king, or the jack. If West has the ace or the king. South must play low. Only if West has the singleton jack should South put up the queen of spades. The odds are therefore 2 to 1 in favor of the low

play.

In short, if South thought about his play, the odds were 2 to 1 in favor of playing a low spade. If South picked a spade by chance, the odds were 4 to 1 that he would pick a low spade. He really had to go out of his way to play the queen but that's the way most bridge players are. And isn't that nice for the rest of us! DAILY m’ESTION Partner opens with three clubs, and the next player passes. You hold: S-Q 8 7 6 5 H-A K J D6 4 2 C-K 7. What do you say? Answer: Pass. Your partner should have considerably less than the value of an opening bid. and the play for game should be non-existent. If your partner makes shutout bids with good hands, as some players do, bid fhree notrump with this hand.

Old Sold Will Play At Valpo The Indiana Collegiate Conference's own version of the “irresistible versus the immovable’’ will be played out this Saturday afternoon when DePauw’s Tigers visit Valparaiso. The Crusaders head the current ICC total offense statistics with a lusty 353 yards per game while DePauw, which has been accenting the negative, has held its five previous ICC opponents to a league low of 175 yards pei’ game. On paper the Crusaders look unbeatable. They possess the nation's number two small college passer in Dave Lass. Lass has personally gathered 1.210 yards -—more than the entire DePauw backfield. Lass-mates are Dick Pohlman, Bill Schade and Mike McGuigan, all among the ICC s top seven pass receivers. They not only throw the ball, but they kick it too. Rich Raridatz paces ICC punters with a fat 41.3 yards per boot. There appear to be a couple of precedents for predicting the type of game it might be. Two weeks ago Ball State and the Crusaders entered a similar battle with similar ICC credentials—top offense vs. top defense. Either Ball State forgot its role or it got carried away watching Valparaiso scamper up and down the field. The score was 48-40. Valpo. As if to reinforce this speculation, the Valpo-De-Pauw series over the past nine years has produced 384 points, an average of better than 20 per team per game.
