and shrewdly returned the seven of diamonds. East finessed with the ten, and South won with the

king.

South now led another low club, and West's jack was gobbled up by his partner’s queen. East couldn’t do better than take the ace of diamonds since otherwise South would get rid of two diamonds on Dummy's club>. Dummy’s queen of diamonds protected declarer from defeat. RISKY DEFENSE W'est could have defeated the contract by a risky defense. When South led the second club, W'est could have put up the king instead of the jack. This would allow West (instead of East) to win the second defensive club

trick.

West would thus be abla to lead another diamond, and East would taKe two diamond tricks to defeat the contract. This defense was not as risky as it seemed. It could cost a trick only if South had the queen of clubs, but in that case South wouldn’t be playing the clubs as he was. If South held Q-x-x of clubs he would lead a club to dummy's ace and then return a low club toward his queen. Part of your information about the unseen cards comes from assuming that declarer is playing the hand like a normal human

being.

Letter To The Editor Department Editor The Newspaper Greencastle, Indiana Dear Sir: I read those big advertisements the Democrats bought in your newspaper, and I was so downright proud of everything they said they’d done, I thought I'd just get in my car and look ’em over. First thing I did was drive over those 9 miles of new streets they said they'd paved. Guess my speedometer must not have been working right, because I couldn’t find but about 7 miles of newly paved streets, but I even found little Taylor Place and counted that. You don't suppose the Democrats stretched their mileage, did they. Those paved streets don’t go very far east, do they. I hadn’t been to the City Park in a long time, but the only changes I found were the new swimming pool the JAYCEES GAVE to the city and a little 9x12’ shelter house. Can you tell me just what this new, expanded recreation program is the Democrats talk about in that ad? I saw those new houses and stuff they talked about giving permits for, but I asked my misses and we both thought there'd been more building going on when we were here 4 years ago. How come the city administration takes credit for this? I hear tell the amount of money they're collecting from the taxpayers is up 44%, but I guess they just forgot to mention that in their advertisements. Of course, the taxpayers don't like to be reminded of that increase—might make 'em vote against the Democrats. All in all, don’t know but what I hope those Republicans get elected. I just think Greencastle folks would like it better. OLD-TIMER
