Insulation Can Be Added House Never Too Old
To Be Made Cosy
Many older homes with charm ar* shy on comfort. One reason for this is that insulation was either skimpy or skipped entirely when they were built. Even many new homes are not insulated adequately to provide both comfort and economy, heating and cooling engineers now tell
us.
Fortunately, the original error Sn insulation can be corrected. Most homes, regardless of age, design or exterior facing material, can be insulated to recommended standards. This has been made possible fcy the development of a method of blowing mineral wool insulation into the walls and ceilings of homes. To insulate walls with “blowing wool,” the contractor first removes sections of the siding to expose the sheathing behind it. Holes are then cut in the sheathing in line with the spaces between studs. Then a pneumatic hose is inserted in these holes end insulation is blown in under air pressure to fill every nook end cranny between the studs. The last step is the careful replacement of the sections of siding to leave no sign of the work that has been done. To insulate ceilings, the pneumatic hose can usually be brought into the attic or crawl
Insulation mechanic is using pneumatic hose to force “blow* ing wool” into spaces between wall studs of older home. space through a ventilating Iou» ver. The mechanic then blows mineral wool into the spaces between the joists, being careful not to cover eaves vents. Once a house has been insulated to recommended standards, families find they enjoy draftfree winter comfort and cooler temperatures during the sum-
mer.
Studies show that families frequently reap a bonus of as much as a 40 per cent reduction in heating costs. At that rate, it doesn’fc take long for the insulation to pay for itself.

elevation of George M. Low to the No. 2 post in the office of Manned Space Flight which is responsible for the U.S. program to land men on the moon. Low as of Nov. 1 will be chief deputy to Dr. George E. Mueller, associate administrator for manned space flight of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Mueller has overall responsibility for all manned space flight projects, including the lunar landing venture now likely to be reviewed and perhaps slowed because of Russia's announced withdrawal from the moon race. Low’s elevation was announced as part of a general reorganization of the manned flight office along lines requested by Mueller since he took over last September from D. Brainer Holmes, who resigned.
