Sheinwold On Bridge Simple Play Helps In World Championship By Alfred Sheinwold When Sidney Silodor died recently at the height of his powers, he was working on a new bridge book. His lifelong friend and bridge partner, Norman Kay, is completing the book—one that bridge players all over the world can expect to read with enjoyment and profit. Perhaps the new book will include this hand, played by Silodor and Kay in the 1961 world championship in Buenos Aires. Bast dealer Neither side vulnerable NORTH A A K 10 2 Q 8 6 4 2

In its affairs. Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo and Sarawak joined in the new federation, which has a population of 10 million and some of the world's richest natural resources. But two of Malaysia’s neighbors. Indonesia and the Philippines, refused to extend recognition, and anti-British slogans were scrawled on walls In Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Malayan Prime Minister Tengku Abdul Rahman, now the pre-

mier of Malaysia, warned Sunday night that Indonesia should "think twice before taking drastic action” against the federaation. In Jakarta. President Sukarno summoned his cabinet to an emergency meeting to discuss Malaysia. Indonesia controls twothirds of Borneo and has attacked the federation as an extension of British imperialism. North Borneo’s first minister, Donald Stephens, said in cere-

monies at his capital of Jesselton that Malaysia, has reason to fear the aggressive intentions of Indonesia. "Let Jakarta understand clearly and finally that our destiny is self-chosen,” he said. Sukarno has objected to a U.N. survey that found the Borneo territories favored federation. The Philippines, which also has some claims to Borneo, said it would make a final decision on recognition after talks among its leaders.

Opening lead — *p Q

The bidding was the same at both tables of the match between the United States and Argentina, and so was the opening lead. The difference came in declarer's play to the first trick. The Argentine declarer won the first trick with the ace of clubs. What was the hurry? He led a spade to the dummy and took a diamond finesse, losing to the singleton queen. West then ran the clubs. Declarer had no way of getting back to his hand, and eventually took only four tricks. Down five! TAKES HIS TIME Silodor took his time about winning a club trick. He let East win the first trick with the king of clubs. It was lucky, of course, that East could not continue the clubs. The other player had the same luck but failed to take advantage of it. At Silodor's table East returned the queen of spades at the second trick. The American expert won with the king of spades and tried the diamond finesse. The finesse lost, but Silodor still had the ace of clubs and wound up making six diamonds, a club and two spades to fullfill the game contract. A simple hold-up play made a difference of five tricks. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one notrump. and the next player passes. You hold. S-A K 10 2 HQ 8 6 4 2 D-8 C-8 7 2. What do you say? Answer: Bid two clubs, the Stayman Convention. asking partner to show a major suit if he can. You plan to raise either spades or hearts to bame. If partner bids two diamonds, denying a major suit, you will show the hearts.

INQI IRY Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu, sister-in-law of the Vietnam President, gestures as she tells newsmen in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, that she would welcome a United Nations inquiry into the religious situation in South Viet Nam. While welcoming the inquiry, she doubted that the U.N. membership would permit an investigation which would set a dangerous precedent and violate the principle cf none-in-tervention in a country’s internal affairs.
