I opened the five of hearts from the West hand, and South— a lady, I need hardly point out —won with the king. She led the king of diamonds to force out the ace, and took the heart return
with the ace.

hrist made the laboring man a great promise. The proclaiming of Labor Day as a national holiday might not be a coincidence after all. In St. Matthew, the Lord promised rest to all those who labor and are heavy laden. Thus the National Holiday was set aside in respect to all those who work together to make our nation strong and free. God is on the side of the working man, but He has no use for the nonproducers— the drones — the sluggards — the usurpers. In Corinthians, He makes it very plain that every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labor. Then, let us not gloat over past accomplishments. Let us put our shoulders to the wheel for greater achievements. As we honor our working women and men, let us reflect on all the good fortunes of every American laborer. And may we reverently think on God as we celebrate, as we pay our respects, for we know, a man’s work is born with him.

played the ten of clubs, and declarer stopped to think—or what ever it is that a lady declarer does in such a situation. FINESSE is CORRECT A finesse is “correct” in such a position. When you have ten cards in a suit you are slightly better off finessing than playing for the king to drop. No need to tell you what happened. The lady played the ace of clubs and captured the king. If she had finessed, she would have gone down two. We looked at the scoresheets later and discovered that .several other players had captured the king of clubs. All of them were women! Just for the record, I want to point out that a finesse is the “correct” play the next time you hold ten cards in a suit. But if you happen to be a lady reader, go ahead and use your intuition. Who am I to fight the facts ? DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one diamond, and the next player passes. You hold: S-Q 5 2 H-J 8 6 5 3 D-8 7 6 5 C-K. What do you say? Answer: Bid one heart. The hand is clearly worth a response, and the only question is whether to raise diamonds or show the moth-eaten heart suit. In general, show a major suit rather than raise a minor.
