Ratification of the twenty has been taken as a foregone conclusion. But statements by some top-flight nuclear scientists over whether the pact adequately protests U. S. security, coupled with former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis L. Strauss’ critical testimony, kept alive concern about moves to restrict the

treaty.

Strauss recommended that two formal reservations be attached to the pact and that Congress take four other moves to guard against losing ground to Russia under the agreement.

a spade trick to East’s jack. The defenders were now in position to take two trumps and two red aces. Nothing could be easier for two average players.

NOT AVERAGE

As it happened. East and West like to think they are not average players. Modesty, or perhaps shame, forbids me to name the East player; and a wish to keep my few remaining friends prevents me from naming West. At any rate. East took the jack of spades and returned the queen of diamonds. West took the ace of diamonds and decided not to cash the ace of hearts. Instead he returned his other diamond. “I don’t believe it,” said South Clicking his tongue at us in a fatherly way, he took the king of diamonds, discarding the losing heart. Then he led a club to finesse through the jack, and the

contract was home.

It happened a few weeks ago, and we’re still arguing about whose fault it was. Maybe we ought to ask a bridge columnist.
