the house he died and his couragous wife, Sarah Shephard Blaydes, finished it a n d reared her nine children there. The house is still in good repair and is basically beautiful. It’s spacious high ceiling rooms and halls, walnut staircase, sparkling crystal prismed chandeliers, giant mirrors and huge fireplaces are proof of a way of life now gone. Many pieces of antique furniture are still in use. The lovely old carved walnut organ, the love seat and matching chair, hign headboard beds and a trundle bed, where generations of Blaydes children slept over the passing years, are still useful items. The little cemetery in a corner of the front yard is the resting place of James Francis and his wife, Sarah Shephard Blaydes. In the same plot are graves of other members of the family and those of several of their colored
slaves.
The few hours spent in reunion, at this historic family home, gives one a sacred feeling of nearness to all those who have lived, loved and passed on to that grand family reunion in that eternal and final home. The generations of Blaydes and th« ir intermarried families go back through the years of two world wars, where many gave their lives; on back through the Civil War and the Revolutionary to a famous ancestor, Francis Scott Key, who wrote our own national anthum. Then taking still another step back in history we arc in Bladen County in England where someone had a dream and the courage to make his dream come true. Today there are Bladyes, and descendants there of. in many states of the union. There have been many successful farmers, school teachers, college professors, doctors, lawyers, musicians, librarians, bankers, auctioneers, ministers and executives. Then in a class of their own, set apart from the rest of the boys I mentioned before. They are the boys who gave up their dreams and their lives for our country and homes so the old “Star Spangled Banner” can continue to wave! Six states were represented at the reunion this year: Kentucky, Term., Mississippi, Texas. Colorado and Indiana. Those attending from Putnam County, Indiana were: Mrs. Sara Blaydes, Bainbridge, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Blaydes and family of North Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Riddle of Barnard. Ward Smith, Roachdale. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ouinnettee and family of Greencastle, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Blaydes and son, Stephen of Reelsville R.R. 1. An abundent picnic lunch was enjoyed by all, in the shady yard, at one o’clock. A brief business meeting and election of officers followed. All the present officers were unanimously re-elected tor the coming year: Cecil S. Blaydes, president. Fortville. Indiana; Sara Scearce Summer, Sec’y. Colonial Heights, Virginia; Carrol Y o u n g K e c k, assistant Sec’y, Roachdale, Indiana. An interesting, short talk was made by one of the ladies from Tenn. The host, Grover C. Blaydes, expressed his delight and appreciation for the attendence of each person and extended an invitation to each and every one to return again next year. A letter from former President Harry Truman, who is a desendant of the Blaydes family, was rerd. Mr. Truman acknowledged his invitation to the reunion and his regret for not attending due to pressing current business. A good time was enjoyed by all. Etch went to his separate home looking forward to the third Sunday in Aug. next year when again it will be a privilege to return to the old Blaydes homestead near Bagdad, Kentucky.
