The Language Of Tumors
THE MAGIC words “malignant’’ and “benign" seem to spell despair or jubilation, anxiety or hope. Patients are often confused and unnecessarily terrified by the terminology that identifies tumors. For clarification, it should be noted that all growths,
composed of fatty tissue. There are also combinations
of tissue tumors such as “fibromyoma”, which stem from fibrous and muscle tissue. This is the type of tumor most fre-
quently found in the uterus. Again, there are finely de-
tailed scientific terms which de-
whether benign j scribe the inner complex of tuo r malignant, j mors. Often the medical, surare classified as ^ gieal or X-Ray treatment of tumors. Tu-1 tumors depends on this tech-

All tumors are divided into two main categories: benign
and malignant. Benign Tumor
A benign growth Is almost self-descriptive. It is one that is usually not harmful, remains quiescent even if it grows and does not tend to destroy ad-
jacent tissue.
The benign tumor usually re-
mains confined by its own enveloping capsule and does not
invade surrounding organs. Yet even a benign tumor, by
its size alone, may compress a vital organ. This explains why there are times when benign tumors must be removed by surgery. Sometimes benign tu-
mors may change their cellular Feared
characteristics; for this reason, benign tumors, too, must be
kept under surveillance
Malignant Growth
Malignant tumors are invasive and destroy neighboring
tissues.
Sometimes a small portion of a malignant tumor, or cancer, can be transported by the blood
may be confused by the wide variety of terms that describe
them.
The unceasing and relentless battle for the prevention, the early recognition and cure of malignant tumors in hospitals and laboratories all over the world is encouraging and heart-
ening.
Experimental investigations that are in progress to establish the cause of cancer are of such proportion that they almost defy our imagination. Each day brings to light more hopeful advances as scientists tirelessly imdeavor to uncover the knowledge that must inevitably lead to the total eradication of
cancer.
