Kappa Delta Phi Gives
Assistance To Putnam Co. When the plans were being made to start i school for the mentally retarded children, classified as trainables, several local civic nd social organizations came forward with offers of financial aid. One of these was the Gamma Phi sorority, which is the local chapter of the K'.tppa Delta Phi., Gamma Phi, the local chapter w a s organized in nineteen and thirty four with ten charter members. Two charter members are stiU active in the group, they are Mrs. Geo.Williams and Mrs. Maurice Hurst. The first president of the group was Ilene Duncan, and the presiding President is M’^s. Murlin Handy. There is today, a mem-
birship of thirty-six.
The local chapter donates annually to the T.B. Assoc. Red Cross, boy and girl scouts, and to the Little League, Multiple, Sclerosis, Heart Fund. They contribute to the Salvation Army, Post Prom Follies, Mental Health, and Muscular Dysthropy. Each year a cash award is given to the winner of the Putnam County Art League Show, and a U.S. saving bond is given to a girl 4.H. winner. They also sponsor a girl each year to Girls
State.
Kappa Delta Phi maintains also a scholarship lending fund. They donated to the swimming pool fund raising'' drive and also for the high school band uni-
forms.
They have been very generous to the Putnam County hospital, in 'as much, as they furnished the third floor lounge, complete and they even included a T. V. set. In the old wing they furnished a two ward and still assume the responsibility for the upkeep
on it.
They installed accousttpal ceilings in part of the hospital and also gave three water coolers. Ten cribs for the newborn, mattresses for the nursery and also an oxygen tent.
Putnam County resli surely hive to admit that these civic minded woiuCn have given much to their community and especially to the hospital for the comfort and wellbeing of the sick, as well as the newborn citizens of the county. All the above have been the giving of their money but they also give of their time. They assist each year in the Red Cross and Multi Sclerosis drives in the city. Each year they do the clerical work required in sending out the letters for T. B. Drives, distributing the T. B. posters and assisting with the Xray mobile unit when it is in town. The chapter raises the money for all these works of charity by selling Christmas cards, Bowers Candy, and Castle Craft jewelry. The chapter his received an award called the National Kappa Delta Phi Citation 'as the result of their charity work. In view of their enviable record of giving to this community, as you have just read, one must surely feel they richly deserved it. The foundress of Kappa Delta Phi was Miss Nan T. McCue and this sorority which has become National and noted for its many Philanthropies was founded in the year of nineteen and twenty five. The founder of Kappa Delta other name now. She is Sister Mary Celeste. She entered the Ursulin Order of Nuns and she resides at the Maple Mt. Convent in Kentucky. She still keeps in touch with the various chapters throughout the nation and until the last few years would write letters inspiring the women of the sorority to even more charitable contributions to their respective communities. The last few years she his been in ill health and can not be as active as she did formerly. Putnam County Special Day School will be opening after the first of September, the same as the public schools. We,* of the school wish again to thank the women of Kappi Delta Phi for their help to these children who, as long as they shall live will remain within the bounderies of Childhood.

Niagara Falls, once traditional for honeymooners, still is a popular site for tourists—but it has fallen from top place as a haven for honeymooners, a spokesman for the agency said. In the list of most popular also are the Pocono Mountains, Sea Island, Ga., Las Vegas, and Palma, Majorca. I * CRIME SPREE ASHLAND, Ore. UPI—Ashland police recounted the crimes of a recent weekend.
