Cataract Lake News B> Hi'len >1. Srhtil/ "Ridge Runners" is what the people who live on the ridge utxive the lake, across from the Cataract Yaucht Club, call themselves. Last week the "Ridge Runners had a scare. Jane Bassett was awakened in the early morning » rkness by her dachshund wanting to be let out. When he got outdoors he began barking frantically. It finally got through to sdeep-fogged Jane that the alarm wasn’t just the presence of a rtbbit or a cat She turned on the outdoor light but the dog s barking was coming from a darkened area. Jane padded barefoot out to the car for a flashlight and went to investigate. Here in the circle of light was a laige snake coiled, ready to strike. She awakened her husband who shot the sn.tke. It was a 3> 2 ft. timber rattler. "And.” said Jane.” now I'm looking for his mate. They say they travel in pairs.” "Art got the mate in our garage.” gsid Betty Baldwin, who lives across the road. "It was a big one too.” The deer are coming up from the deep woods and are fascinating to see. Lairy Birle reports having seen five. Many people

have Se«i one along ILe pi t groves leading to the park. It is well to drive carefully through that art . Deer are responsible for many accidents, cailights confuse them. From our kitchen window we can watch the cardinal and turtledoves and their young. The cardinal and his tamily come to the feeder but the doves like their giain scattered on the patio floor. An interesting and beneficial program is underway on Cataract Lake as of this week. Rough ti h. which include: carp, buftalo and shad are being removed from the waters bv private enterprise under the supervision of the St >te Conservation Dept. All fish are taken alive and put into a "holding pen” from which they aie loaded into tank trucks and transported to a processing plants in Illinois. Here they are made into cat food and fertilizer. The fish are kept alive until processing begins. Lieber Park report* for last week: 6200 p id admissions. 4000 children, 2300 cars and 850 campers. A group of 40 Mennonites calling themselves the “f a m i 1 y campers" came to the park from Silem. 111. The Lafayette Boat Club bringing appiox. 75 boats came down for a day on the lake Sunday.
