Liston V/inner In First Round LAS VEGAS. New UPI—The heavyweight title was gone for good today and only the vestiges of Floyd Patterson’s pride refused to believe it. They all thought he should quit when Sonny Liston's iron fists crushed him to the canvas for the second straight time Monday night. For this was the pitiful finish of a man who had been a second-rate champion at best. But Patterson still could not believe it. “1 know I’m not in the picture any more,” he said in a gentle voice, ‘‘But 1 do not know I will not retire. ‘ I’ll start at the bottom again but I don’t feel I’m finished.” He was the only one present who felt that way. And Floyd was booed by the fans when he left the ring. He could draw but little consolation from the fact that he had lasted four seconds longer Monday night than at Chicago on Sept.

—GOVERNORS "gagged” the governors and undermined the states. He slid it was incredible that the Democratic President had done nothing to stop the action of the Democratic governors. The political benefits, if eny, gained by Rockefeller at this conference cannot be measured. Under prodding from GOP National Chairm n William E. Miller. however, the Republican governor' did give an unusual display of unity. Rockefeller was joined in this fight by governors supporting or le ning toward Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona, his potential rival for the presidential nomination.

She inwold On Bridge Save Your Key To Open Door By Alfred Sheimvold There’s nothing like getting home from a vacation with your car keys and the keys to various hotel rooms but no key to your own house. Many bridge players practice this kind of foolishness and chalk the results up to bad luck.

Opening lead — A Q South won the first trick with the ace of spades, thus using up an entry to his hand for no good reason. He drew two rounds of trumps with the ace and king, pausing for thought when \\ est showed out. Declarer’s next move was to lead a club to dummy’s jack to try the heart finesse. West won w ith the king of hearts and returned a diamond to make declarer ruff. BAD BREAK South drew the last trump and cashed the ace of hearts. Unfortunately, the hearts broke badly. The hand blew up, and South was down three. Declarer can make his contract by working on the hearts before drawing trumps, but this is dangerous. Conceivably, he may lose a heart trick and a heart ruff (if West has four hearts to the king instead of a singleton king). The simplest way to protect the slam is to win the first trick in dummy with the king of spades. South next draws four rounds of trumps and leads a low heart. If the opponent who takes the king of hearts returns a diamond to force out South’s last trump. South can lead a heart to dummy’s jack and get back with the ace of spades to cash the rest of the hearts. In a manner of speaking, the ace of spades is the key to the South hand. South must save the key instead of throwing it away at the first trick. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes.
