Sheinwold On Bridge Too Much Optimism (»«*ts You Nowhere By ALFRED SHEIN WOLD “It is better to aim at a star
and hit a barpost,” I once read somewhere, ‘than to aim at a barpost ahd hit the ground.” This is probably all right if you know what a bar post is and happen to want one. At the briclge table, however, it’s better to forget about the stars and aim at something you can hit. South won the first trick with the ace of clubs and led the queen of spades for a finesse. East won with the king of spades and returned the queen of hearts.

From here on South had an easy time. South won the heart return with the ace, drew trumps w’ith the ace and jack, and led a club toward dummy. West put up the ten, and dummy won with the king and returned the nine of clubs. Back came a heart to the king,
and South led a diamond to set (the queen
up one of dummy's honors. When declarer got to dummy with a diamond he cashed the eight of clubs to discard a diamond from his hand. He lost only one diamond, one trump, and one
club.
SHOULD HAVE KNOWN East should have known that South had the ace and king of hearts for they were the only high cards that South could have for his decision to go on to four spades. South might have opened the bidding with just two aces and a spade suit headed by Q-J-10, but then he would have stopped at three spades. East was aiming at the stars when he returned the queen of hearts because his partner couldn't possibly have a high heart. West could have the ten of diamonds, however, and East could have aimed at that by returning a low diamond instead of
hearts.
West’t ten would force out dummy’s queen of diamonds. West would get in with the jack of clubs in time to lead another diamond. East would get two diamond tricks, defeating the con-
tract. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 2 NT (22 to 24 points), and the next player passes. You hold: S-K 8 4 H-Q J 10 D-A J 4 3 C-7 4 2. What do you say?
Answer: Bid 6 NT. The combined count must be 33 to 35 points, which is usually enough for a small slam, L’t not for a grand slam.

- By LESTER L» COLEMAN, M.D. Heart Wards
A SUDDEN severe heart attack calls for the immediate and co-ordinated efforts of doctors, nurses, orderlies and hospital personnel for the survival of the patient. Teamwork is the essence of hope for patients brought to the hospital or for patients already in the hospital. I n hospitals [ all over America, special heart wards are being set up and staffed with personnel trained to work harmoniously and quickly to Dr. Coleman meet any heart emergency that may arise. These heart wards are thoroughly equipped with every modem device. Precious moments are saved by this fine combination of team work and readily available equipment. Even after a heart attack has been controlled and the patient seems well on the road to recovery, he remains on the heart ward as an added precaution aganst any recurrence. When he Is ready to be released from the hospital, special education of his family is incorporated as a home extension course of the heart ward program. • • • THf RIGHT ANTIBIOTIG When penicillin and the other antibiotics were first discovered and developed, it was by trial and error that their destructive effects on germs were determined. The term “broad spectrum” describes the wide range of germs and bacteria that can be killed or subdued by any ■peciflc antibiotic. Even though a number of antibiotics may be effective aganst certain bacteria, some antibiotics stand out as being particularly powerful. For a long time it was not definitely known how an antibiotic destroys the bacteria. Only recently, at the Cornell Vedical Center in New York, delicate studies have shown the details of the battle hetwseen germ and antibiotic under the
powerful electronic microscope. These studies have suggested new investigations to uncover the reasons why some germs develop their own resistance against their common enemy, the antibiotic. You can now see why your doctor does not always select the same antibiotic even when the illnesses seem the suae tft the patient. • • • :ONSIL TIMt There was a time when the year was divided into five seasons: summer, fall, winter, spring and the tonsil season. Tha month of May was considered idea! for the removal of the tonsils and adenoids. Colds wer* less prevalent and the warm spring sun seemed conducive to convalescence. Then, with the advent of tho antibiotics and with fear of infection minimized, tho tonsil season was extended to include the entire year, with the exception of July, August and ^>art of September. These months were specifically avoided because of the high rale of poliomyelitis during tho summer season. There seemed to bo a higher frequency of the bulbar type of polio in children who had only recently had & tonsillectomy. Safe Any Time Of course, now that polio has been almost completely controlled by the Salk and the Sabin vaccines, tonsillectomy can be safely performed at any time. Few doctors, however, deliberately choose the summer season for this operation unless there is a special need. When the reasons for removal are carefully evaluated by your doctor, now any season is open season for tonsils! These columns are designed to relieve your Jears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. AH the hopeful new advances in medicine reported here aro known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knotes you best.
