If t3 fadxr't Day? May wc honor the gay whose heart is 0 tender as » woman**... the IcIIow whose respect is as genuine as that of 9 mother. This nationally celebrated day lot Father didn’t come too soon. For Dad is the gay who dared the wiles of the forest and the death-dealing miseries of the prairie, to insure added comforts for Mom, and Sue, and Dan. The taming of the west is actually the story of gruff ole 'Pop* in his triumph over difficulty and danger to make a finer future for those be loved. He was the hardy patbmaker for our feet Gifts for Father? Yes, but much better would be a gracious, kind word of thanks for all his sacrifices through the year. On this celebrated day, say a prayer to the great Father God, for happiness and comradeship that will soften the burdens of the remaining years, and make the last ones truly bis most Golden Years.

Sheinwold On Bridge Nonsense Play Causes Argument By ALFRED SHEINWOLD “Please offer an opinion on an incident that has caused trouble in our bridge club.” a reader requests. “The question is whether a player has the right to make a nonsense play with every appearance of being serious.” South dealer North-South Tulnerabb NORTH 4 None <7 10 6 5 2 O K ! t 2 * J f * 3 3 WEST EAST A J 10 9 * 4 4 3 S?KJ3 (709*7 OAS4 O Q 10 9 5 I ♦ A Q 7 9 4 SOUTH 4 AKQ7C5 2 V A 4 O 7 4k K t6 S Am* Wot North Root 2 4 Toss 2 NT Pub 4 4 Double All Pass Owning lead —41 “South won the first trick with the king of hearts and returned a diamond, losing dummy's king to the ace. East returned the deuce of spades. “South played low, West won with the queen, and now South gravely played the jack of spades from dummy. He didn’t take a long time to make the play, and he wasn’t dramatic about it, but he did keep a perfectly straight face as he made this nonsense play. “West thought South had the A-10 of spades left since otherwise the play of dummy’s jack made no sense. West therefore shifted back to hearts, and South l

rattled off 10 tricks. WOULD HAVE LOST “South would have lost his contract if West had continued spades. The defense would take four spades and the ace of diamonds. “West was very annoyed about the play ot the jack of spades. He said South had no right to make a silly play seriously. “What is the expert opinion of this sort of play?" West is entitled to a year's supply of crying towels, at his own expense. He may also wear the Medal of the Horselaugh, Third Class. This sort of incident couldn't happen in all-expert game because an expert East wouldn't lead the deuce (or any other very’ low card) unless he could support a return lead. With 9-S-6-3 of spades, East would lead the nine rather than the deuce. When East did lead the deuce, an expert West would return the suit no matter how seriously declarer played the jack from dummy. South was well within his rights in playing the jack of spades from dummy. There’s nothing wrong with giving an opponent his chance to be foolish. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes. You hold: S-K Q 7 4 H-10 9 8 7 D-9 5 2 C-9 7. What do you say? Answer: Pass. Don't try to find a major-suit fit with less than 8 points. It is better to stop at 1 NT than to get up to the level of two or three looking for a fit that may not exist.
