Nobody threw a club. South led a club to dummy’s ace, discarded two clubs on the high diamonds, and led a club from dummy. East took two club tricks, an that was the end of

the slam.

You surely know the criminal, but have you spotted the crime? What would you do in the criminal's place? Decide for yourself before you read on.

WRONG SUIT

South was the criminal, for he should have made his slam. He put his faith in the wrong suit when he played for the clubs

to break 2-2.

After winning the first trick in dummy with the ace of hearts. South should immediately a low diamond with the ace of

five of spades to dummy’s seven. Declarer cashes the ace and king of diamonds, discarding two clubs then ruffs another diamond. When the diamonds break 4-4. the slam is assured. South gets back to dummy with the ace of clubs to discard his last club on dummy’s last diamond. South cannot tell in advance that the diamonds are going to break, but it costs nothing to try. If the diamonds fail to break evenly. South can then fall back on the clubs. Two chances are better than

one.

DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one heart, and the next player passes. You hold; S-6 H-K S 7 5 3 DJ 10 8 5 C-K Q J. What do you say? Answer: Bid three hearts. The hand is too rich in high cards for a shutout raise to four hearts. The raise to three hearts is a very slight stretch because the hand is aceless, but it is the best descriptive bid available.
