Everyone is cordially invited. Robert D. Loring, associate professor of geography and geology at DePauw University, has completed his seventh article for the American Peoples’ Encyclopedia. The latest account, scheduled to appear in the 1959 edition of the encyclopedia, is written on the subject of Patagonia. Mrs. John Gray, Reelsville R. 2. Mis. Forest Williams, Cloverdale R. 1, and Mrs. Robert Stallcop. Greencastle R. 2, have returned from Baltimore. Md. They went by plane to attend the installation of Mrs. Williams mother. Mrs. Ivan Craggs, as national president of the National Pocahontas League. Miss Carolyn Humbert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell J Humbert, 125 Wood Street, Greencastle, Ind. is in the graduate department among the students enrolled for the 1958-59 academic year at Wheeloek general education and professional training to prepare students to teach nursery, kindergarten and primary grades. Graduates receive the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education.

Canaan Home Demonstration Club Holds Meeting

The Canaan Home Demonstration Club met Thursday, Sept. 18, at the home of Mrs. Carl Elliott. Mrs. Ora Sechman was assistant hostess. At the noon hour Mrs. Iona Goss returned thanks for the bountiful pitch-in-dinner. After the delicious dinner, Mrs. Vein Runnells, president called the meeting to order. The song of the month, “Shine on Harvest Moon,” was sung, after which Mrs. Clyde Jones gave the origin. Happy Birthday was sung to Mrs. Joe Garrett. Mrs. Lloyd Greenlee led the salute to the American and Christian flags. The club creed was repeated in unison. Roll call, a new fall salad, was answered by sixteen members. There were four guests, Mrs. Maxine Cox, Mrs. Alberta Miller. Mrs. Clara Davis and Mrs. Paul Herod, and seven children pres-

ent.

Mrs. Vern Lydick gave a very interesting lesson on “Swedish Weaving.” She displayed some beautiful articles of clothing which ilustrated her lesson very nicely. The secretary’s report was given by Mrs. Iva Harcourt and the treasurer’s report was given by Mrs. Donald Woodall. Mrs. Vern Lydick and Mrs. Leffel Goss reported on the council meeting. The election of officers for next yea.r was held with the following results. President, Mrs. Vern Runnells, vice president, Mrs. Vern Lydick; secretary, Mrs. Helen Stone; assistant secretary. Mrs. Lloyd Greenlee; and treasurer, Mrs. Donald Woodall. Mrs. Fannie Johnson gave two clever contests. The meeting w r as adjourned by repeating teh club prayer in uni-

Nixons Depart For California

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)—Vice President Richard M. Nixon flew westward from Indiana today after scolding Hoosier Republicans for lethargy in the campaign. State Traffic Toll Mounting

Indiana’s w’orst wave of traffic deaths in 1958 continued into September’s last day today as the toll grew to at least .23 in 80 hours. The Indiana highway death toll for September climbed to at least 117, heaviest toll since last December and the first month this year in which the toll has crossed the 100 mark.

LOST CHILD

IRON MOUNTAIN. Mich. UPI Hope faded today for the safety of 4-year-old Kenneth Scott, missing since Sunday in wild, deer and bear country of Upper Michigan. More than 1.200 police. National Guardsmen and volunteers w r ere engaged in the search through dense woods, heavy underbrush and tangled swamps of the area, 20 miles north of Iron Mountain. They were aided by airplanes, helicopters and bloodhounds.

FILLMORE While cutting corn Monday, Sept. 8, Albert Truesdal cut two fingers and was taken to the Putnam County Hospital where it took 22 stitches to close the cuts. Wednesday was initiation day at high school. The freshmen wore ludicious costumes all day, then the sophomore class gave them a nice party that night. Wendell Smith is the freshman sponsor and Shirrel Alexander is the sophomore sponsor. More than 100 women attended the Brazil Sub-District meeting of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service at the Methodist church Thursday. Miss Susie Talbott is the group leader. The local organization served luncheon at noon. The 7th grade had a wiener roast on the school giounds Thursday night. Mrs. Ruth Hammond is their sponsor. Almost a hundred 4-H Junior Leaders of the district met at the school building Thursday night and enjoyed a hamburger supper. Mrs. Verna Zeiner is sinking a new well. Mrs. Pauline Storm of Winona Lake, is visiting Mrs. Verna Zeiner and other relatives. The Flower Show held at the Masonic Hall on Friday was well attended. There were more entries of flowers and vegetables than expected. Hobart Buchanan and C. J. Huller left Sunday to enter Purdue University. Fillmore Band won 3rd trophy at the Ellettsville contest Satur- j day. Trudy Siddons has been absent j from school since Sept. 2 because of a broken kg. Linda and Rickie Pickett are staying with their grandparents and going to school at Danville until their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pickett move to their new home south of Danville. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Quick, Mrs. Anna Phillips and Mrs. Luella Quick drove over to M 11 Creek church Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Willis Bastin and daughters spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Oliver. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Newkirk of Indianapolis are the parents of a daughter born Saturday night at the Methodist Hospital. The maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Huller. Lloyd Nichols, who is employed at Bridgeport Brass, was injured last week and has been a patient in the Methodist Hospital Pat and Pam Bowen of Coatesville spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bowen.
