TV Sets Reported In White House
Washington iup> The White House said today that President Eisenhower has two color TV sets on loan from the National Broadcasting Co. It said four other sets-including one in the President's office are on loan from the broadcasting industry to various members of the official White House family whose duty it is to ‘ follow the news.” Presidential Press Secretary •James C. Hagerty took the position there is nothing wrong in thin. His remarks were in reply to questions prompted by the fact that House investigators are looking into charges that members of Federal Communications Commission accepted gifts and favors from broadcas-
ters.
The FCC regulates the broadcasting industry and grants li censes for TV stations. The President has nothing to do with these matters, other than to appoint 1 members of the commission. The charges about the FCC 1 were made in a memorandum prepared by the staff of a House Commerce subcommittee. Chairman Oren Harris D-Ark. of the full committee said there would be "complete investigation" of the charges. Hagerty said provision of TV sets for the White House had been customary since the advent of television. “It is the same as the United Press and the Associated Press ! lending their city news services,” Hagerty said. The United Press and the Associated Press have provided tele- 1 type news service for the White House for some years without ‘ pay except for the cost of papei ■used in the machines. The charges against the federal communications commissioners were contained in a subcommittee staff report made available to the United Press. It sail 1 unnamed FCC members allowed the industry they regulate to give them color TV sets and to foot the bills when they and their attended radio and television conventions. White said that Thompson had been instructed by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to seek the Soviet L’nion’s reaction to President Eisenhower's Jan. 12 reply to Soviet proposals for a
summit conference.
White reported that Gromyko said that the President’s letter "would be studied and that the Soviet government would give its comments in due course.”
