CARACAS, Venezuela (UP) A patriotic junta overthrew the . nine year old dictatorship of! President Marcos Porez Jimenez j today and sent him fleeing the : | country, apparently to the Dom- j inican Republic. Caracas Radio announced the fall of the government at 2:30 a. 1 m. after two days of bloody re- | bellion that flashed into a nationwide civil war and cost scores, perhaps hundreds of lives The overthrow was carried out l by a civilian-military committee which said it had the complete backing of the nation's armed forces. It quickly set up a fiveman military junta headed by Rear Adm. Wolfgang Larrazabel to run the country. Perez Jimenez’s private DC-4 j was seen leaving the airport here j and diplomatic sources said he I was fleeing to the Dominican Re- ! public which already had given j haven to some of his previously j ousted officers. Diplomatic sources said the 43I year-old president would join Na- ! tional Security Chief Pedro Es j i trada and Defense Ministei Gen. , Romulo Fernandez who went to j Ciuda.d Trujillo in the Jan. 13 , government shakeup following j the abortive Jan. 1 revolution. The situation in Caracas was i outlined to the nation by a series of radio broadcasts in which all the nation's radio a,nd television j stations were hooked up into one ;
' network.
One broadcast told the populace the 6 p. m. to 5 a. m. curfew im- | posed by Perez Jimenez was in j effect but the populace ignored | this. Within minutes cars raced through the city honning theii horns while people shouted "liberty” fiom their windows. Telephones were tied up by friends calling with the news. The broadcasts emphasized , that all units of the aimed forc- ! es were in agreement. Fabricio Ojeda identified himself a , presiI dent of the patriotic junta and ! assured the fullest coopeiation i with the different army cv ps and , other military groups. Newspapers which do.-; d foi : the general strike prepared t<
| publish extras-
Diplomatic sources in Washington reported between 200 and t 300 dead and up to 1,000 injured. : but estimates in Caracas placed , the number of dead closer to 145. i Jails were filled with prisoners and hospitals were overcrowded ■ j with the wounded and dying. The revolution, inspired by an I ajr force revolt on Jan. 1. began 1 as a general strike shortly bej fore noon Tuesday. Street fight- | ing broke out immediately and the uprising spread throughout
;the country.
Angry crowds swarmed through i the streets shouting "down with the dictator! down with Perez Jimenez!" Secret police answered with tear gas and rifles. 'Ihe reb- ; els fought back with arms of j their own until victory was won An announcement over Radio Caracas said all of the armed j forces were "in accord" with the j group which deposed the govem- , ment and that their only desire j was to restore freedom and de- * mocracy to Venezuela.
