'58 May Determine Race For Survival
NTCW YOR-K (UP) The season of stock-taking and high resolve arrived with the first tick of the clock on the year 1958, and rne man's notion of the temper of cur time is this: That the year on whose threshold we stand holds the possibility of do or die for the Western world. That the race for survival of a free humanity may be predetermined by what we do in thene .165 days. That most of the •'doing" must of necessity be American effort. That the burden, in the end.
will be ours to shoulder. If we will, as individual Americans, you
and me.
That most of ns. right now. are paying lip service to the word ’‘sacrifice" with scant attention to what it must mean in sloughing off the fat of easeful living and developing lean resiliency. It is now nine score and one
year since
lorth on this continent a new nation" -since they solemnly de- 1 dared they would “mutually pledge to each other our lives, 1 cur fortunes, and our sacred honor.” - »♦ '| Maybe the time has come to do some pledging of our own. As 1957 closed out its days. The New York Times said editorially: “The question is not .so much whether we are strong enough to { survive but whether we deserve ! to survive.” It added it believed we kept, and improved, the quality of our democracy during 1957. All right, maybe we did. But what seems to be at stake now is 1 not so much our ability to endure as a national entity as it is our will to preserve a way of good- j i ei*s and tJUth for mankind. If resolution is in order—and any American who wants to may feel free to join in let us now
resolve:
To see to it that “faith in ourselves" it not a hollow—and even mocking phase but a good insti-
tution.
To reaffirm by works that dynamism in America is a living thing rather than a history-book item; that resourcefulness and skill and joy of competition are still our trademarks. To stand ready to lose some na-
tional fat.
To try to prove that truth, beauty, courage, and goodness for its own sake are not old-fashion-ed but are with us now. Not to falter but to move ahead with high spirit.
