Overseas Yanks Play Santa Claus FRANTCTTT.T. Germany fUP) —The AmerKan Soldier, thotisands of mi lew from hi« own hearthside, is recapturing the Chrtsimas spirit of home by playing Saint Nicholas to some 75,000 Europeans in “Operation Good Cheer." Military men throughout the U. S. Army in Europe are contributing time, talent and money to a voluntary campaign to aid or entertain needy orphans, refu-
gees and inmates of old age homes and patients in hospitals. Thousands of soldiers are participating in hundreds of parties staged in their own barricks. in homes and in institutions, and often the good Saint Nicholas passing out the gifts is shod in gleaming U. S. Army combat boots. The round of Christmas partief* began Dec. 6 and will continue through Christmas Day. No accurate tabulation of the number of parties appears possible, but a partial commandwide total compiled by United Press indicates that among Army guests in Germany will be 51,000 needy children and orphans, nearly 7,000 old age home residents. 4.000 hospitalized people, some 1.600 needy families and between 3.000-4,000
[ refugees. ~'

Pilgrims Pass Guarded Barrier
BETHLEHEM, Jordan UP — The barrier of hate dividing the Holy Land lifted at dawn today in Jeru.^lem and Christian pilgrims embarked on the read to Oethlehem—the birthplace of the Prince of Peace. Israeli and Jordanian bolder guards obeyed orders to stand aside for 36 hours to let Y'hrist-iaru-5 from Israel and other paits rf the world pass through the Maiulelbauni Gate. About 1,700 were expected to cross no man’s land into Jordan. Roman Catholic patriarch Alberto Gori headed the traditional procession of the clergy from Jerusalem to Bethlehem at 5 a. m. EST. to begin services beneath the Church of the Nativity, in the cavern where Christ was born. The route of the procession wound from the Mandelbaum Gate down the Valley of Cedron, past the Garden of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives and then along the winding road to Beth-
lehem.
It was watched by shepherds who guarded their flocks today much as shepherds did in the time of Chiist. Consuls-general of seven nations, including the United States, planned to atend a pontifical midnight Mass here. Consuls once went in procession down the old road past the well where the three wise men are said to have halted to drink. Today that road is blocked with tank traps and mines. Protestant ceremonies for Christmas were led by a carol service in the field of the shepherds two miles from Bethlehem this afternoon. Other Protestant services were scheduled in Churches in Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
