SENTENCES COMMITTED INDIANAPOLIS UP — Gov. Handley today commuted the life sentence of Wilbur Bitzei. who was sentenced in Huntington County in 1945 for inflicting injury in commission of a robbery. Handley also commuted to tune served the 10 to 20 yeai sentence of Max Becraft, sentenced in 1952 from Allen County on burglary’ charges. But the governor turned down clemency for two murderers, a kidnaper, a rapist, an Adams County bank robber and 16 other men.

Eight Children Perish In Fire
SHERBROOKE. Que. (UP) — Fireman today believed a faulty oil stove triggered the inferno which engulfed an eight-room frame house Sunday, burning to death eight young children. The fire apparently started shortly after Mis. Marie-Ange Denault, 32, had left for 7:30 a. m. Mass with her 13-year-old son Robert, leaving the other eight children with their sleeping father. Mrs. Denault had turned up the stove at her husband Lionel’s request shortly before leaving the house. Denault, 38-year-old pulp and paper worker, suffered third del gree burns and cuts in trying to save the children. He had tw’o of them in his arms at one point, but he W’as so badly burned they managed to wriggle loose in their oanic. Denault escaped through a ground floor window. Mrs. Denault knew nothing of the tragedy until she and her ;on returned fiom church to see he one-and-a-half story building blazing. Friendly Neighbors Club Holds Meeting The Friendly Neighbors Club of Manhattan met Nov. 13 at the home of Virginia Price in Brazil. A Thanksgiving dinner was enjoyed at the noon hour. The m< t ■■ was called to order by the president, Bessie Roberts, and opened by singing “Over the Hill and Far Away.” Devotions were given by Virgina Price. These, and many more ?ood ideas were brought out in this very informative talk. The latter part of the evening was spent at the observatory, where Mr. Johnson and his assistant pointed out several of the more interesting star groups. A short history run-down on some of the better known stars was given by Mr. Johnson. Following the observatory trip, members of the sorority returned to Miss Lancaster’s home for delicious refreshments. Table decorations were in keeping with Thanksgiving.
