Tigers Host To Wheaton Dec. 2nd Running into a national championship team their first night out, DePauw’s Tigers will open the 1957-58 cage campaign here Monday against the powerful j Wheaton Crusaders. The non-conference contest, which also initiates action for the visitors from Illinois, sc heduled to begin at 8 p. m. in Bowman i Memorial Gymnasium. | I.aeJt March the Crusaders picked up the NCAA’s first national college- division crown, | knocking off Kentucky Wesleyan j in the finals and running their | current winning streak to 21 | games. Winners of the Indiana Collegiate Conference championship in 1957-58, DePauw was eliminated by the same Wesleyan club in the first round of the postseason NCAA tourney. Wheaton Coach Lee Pfund lost only two men by graduation and still has nine lettermen, including Little All-America Bob Whitehead and leading scorer Mcf Peterson at the forwards. Fighting for the center berth are 6-<T John Pobbert and 6-4 Don Chamberlain, and in the backcourt will be a pair of veteran guards, co-captains Don ! Anderson and Bill Gerig. Despite the temporary loss of four top candidates, including last year's high scorer, guard John Bunnell. DePauw Coach Cal Luther is expected to go with an all-veteran crew. Probable starters a r e 6-1 Tom Johnson and 6-3 Bing Davis at the forwards, 6-7 Chuck Cleaver in the pivot, and 6-2 Joe Lawlor | and 5-11 Carl Meditch at guard. Joining Bunnell on the inactive list are guards! Morrie Goodnight and Frank PFtes. all recipients of one-game ^pensions for infrac- I tions of training regulations. Another missing eager will be i one of DePauw’s most promising j soph* mores, t >rward Drexel Har- j vey, who recently underwent a foot operation He is expected to be out of action at least until mid December. Less serious airlines are handicapping sophomore forward Bob Canfield and sophomore guard Jarrell Graham, both victims of leg injuries. Playing behind DePauw's starting five will be forward Smie Modzelew ki, centers Dwight Tallman and John Phompson. and guards Darrell 7rosby and Ron Rich.
