Shemwold on Bridge Puzzling Defense Hurts Partnership By Alfred Sheinwold The defense slipped badly when today's hand was played, in an important New York tournament. The player who made the fatal slip asserted later that his partner had pushed him.

West opened the deuce of 1 clubs, a rather unfortunate j choice. East had to take the ace of clubs, and the defenders had to develop their tricks in a hurry. East returned the jack of hearts. South put up the queen, and West won with the ace. At this stage West scratched his chin, bit his lip and gave other evidence of deep thought. Then he returned the five of diamonds! This leader gave South his contract. He took three diamond tricks, discarding dummy’s remaining heart. South lost a trump trick eventually, in addition to the club and heart already taken
. by the defenders.
EAST AT FAULT It does look as though West went out of his mind when he returned the five of diamonds, ' but he claimed the mishap was , his partner's fault. Strangely ewjugh, this was quite true. West knew' that he could defeat the contract if his partner had the king of hearts or the king of diamonds. Which king did East hold? Which ever king it happened to be, that w r as the suit West needed to lead. West just happened to make the wrong guess. There was no need for East to give his partner such a problem. At the second trick. East shcnuld have led the three of hearts instead of the jack of hearts. Among experts, the lead of a email card in this situation indicates a wdsh to have the suit continued. A player who has four or five cards headed by the queen or king will lead a low r card; but if his four or five cards are headed by the jack or lower, he will tend to lead a somewhat higher card
Reds Work Way Into Congress
WASHINGTON (UP) — The chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities said Sunday night that Communists have penetrated Congressional committee rooms and the offices of individual Congressmen. Rep. Francis E. Walter D-Pa. reported “a new technique of Communist penetration of government” udneh he said "is exemplified by the official association of an identified member of
nesses ‘‘under oath as a member of the Communist Party and a former member of; a Communst cell in the Office of Price AdminI istration,” a World War II ageni cy. He said Dumer had invoked ! the Fifth Amendment and refus- \ ed to answer questipns about | Communist Party membership at | a closed meeting of the commit-
; tee last Wednesday.
Lumer promptly denied he w r as under Communist discipline in
his Congressional work.
He said he had invoked the Fifth Amendment because he felt the committee* could not constitutionally inquire into my political beliefs or associations.” Walter said Lumer "has been 7y-V'ely participating in the w r ork of a number of Congressional Committees and has been serving as consultant and adviser tov arious individual Senators and members of Congress since” June,
1953.
Give Thanks By Charity Donation WASHINGTON UP— America's three great religious faiths will urge their members next week to "give thanks by giving” to- the hungry and homeless of other lands. Thanksgiving week marks the start, of simultaneous but separate appeals by Protestant, Catholic and Jewish relief organizations which have become the primary channels for ‘‘person to person” American aid to destitute families abroad. Operating with low overhead costs, and making full use of surplus farm products made available free by the Agriculture Department, these religious agencies- offer Americans an opportunity to dispense a great deal of charity for comparatively little money. Each dollar of private contributions moves about 300 pounds of food overseas. A $5 donation will give bowls of cereal to 500 undernourished children each day for three weeks. Ten dollars will provide bread for 400 needy persons for two months.
This year the religious agencies are distributing nearly 14 billion pounds of food, 30 million articles of clothing and thousands of tons of blankets and medicine in 80 foreign countries. But even this program has barely scratched the surface of chronic poverty and undernourishment. The agencies hope to do much more next year—if the Thanksgiving appeals bring in enough contributions. Proceeds of the Protestant “share our surplus'’ drive will go to Church World Service, the in-
tei denominational relief ami of as ‘‘Operation Clotnes Closet,” the National Council of Churches ^ he clothing collected by local es.
