Satellites Mark Red Anniversary

Soviet Russia celebrated the * 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution this week while its two earth satellites spun round the world. “Sputnik II” was projected into its glove-circling orbit by means of ‘‘new sources of power,” Moscow said. In the new satellite was sealed a dog, the world’s first space passenger, along with scientific instruments to record and broadcast its reactions as it sped at (the rate of 17,895 miles an hour, 1,056 miles above the earth. Communist leader Nikita S. Khrushchev was the orator at a special meeting of the Supreme Soviet, the parliament. Khrushchev boasted of Rus1 sia’s scientific successes and de- ■ rided the United States for its slowness. He boasted also that Russia would overtake the United States in industrial production, and he called again for a conference of capitalist and Communist countries on world issues. Marshal Rodion Y. Malinovsky, the new defense minister, reviewed an impressive military pai rade. In this, new weapons in- ! eluding two rockets, about 75 feet long, and numerous smaller rockets were displayed.

! INDIANAPOLIS (UP) — South Bend Central and Indianapolis Attacks, finalists in the 1957 Indiana high school basketball tourney, today were tabbed as tbe top contenders for the throne in 1958. Each team received 10 votes j in a cross-section pre-season coaches’ survey by United Press. Champion South Bend lost three starters from the quintet that went all the way without a scratch during 1956-57 and will get a late start this time. Some j of the football-playing boys are ( expected to battle for starting berths on the hardwood floor, but they won’t be ready a week from Saturday when the Bears risk their 30-game winning streak against Gary Roosevelt. Personnel-wise, Attucks is in much better shape. New coach Bill Garrett, the former Shelbyville flash, inherited four starters from Ray Crowe, who was boosted upstairs to athletic director. The Tigers lost only Albert Mavey through graduation. And they have until Nov. 29 when they open against Sheridan to get over football bruises. The two powerhouses can expect plenty of competition, however. The experts figured at least 13 other outfits will be be ctling for state prestige. Indianapolis Tech grabbed 6 votes, Terre Haute Garfield 4, Fort Wayne South 3, and Terre 1 Haute Gerstmeyer 2. Others included South Bend Adams, Elkhart. Jeffersonville, Shelbyviile. Fort Wayne Central and North, Muncie Central and Elkhart. Among the smSll-town powers, Middlebury and New Paris were

recognized.
