West opened the jack of hearts dummy played low, and East won with the king. East happily returned the seven of hearts, removing the ace of hearts from the dummy. Now there was nc side entry to dummy’s long dia-
j mond suit.
South got to his hand with the king of spades and led the eight of diamonds. West should have played low, but he was a creature of habit. He put up the queen of diamonds, and that war the end of him. Declarer let the queen of diamonds hold the trick. He won the heart return and led his remaining diamond. West played low and South held his breath as he finessed dummy’s ten. FINESSE WORKS The finesse succeeded, and declarer took the ace of diamonds and the rest of the suit. This gave South ten tricks, and he scored game and rubber with an unetpok en vote of thanks to West. There woud be no gamp or rubber if West simply played a ,ow diamond on the first round of that suit. Dummy could win, or South could let the eight of damonds hold the trick. Then West would be ready to play the jiieen of diamonds on the next round of the suit. Declarer would take two diamond tricks—but nt’ more. West’s remaining picture card would act as a barrier against the rest of the suit. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S—A K 8 ^ H—8 4 D—A Q 6 C—Q 8 5 4. What do you say? Answer: Bid one club.
