Youth Shovels Way To $37,500 NEW YORK UP — Thomas Watson, 19, a. farm machinery draftsman from Battle Creek, Mich., shoveled his way to a fot tune of approxibately $37,500 today in one of the wackiest big prize contests of the year. The tall, athletic youth choveled up the prize money in five minutes from a 7V-«-ton pile of silver dollars totalling $250,000 in the grand ballroom of the Waluorf-Astoria Hotel. He was the first-prize winner of a ‘'Silver Dollar Sweepstakes” drawing sponsored by a soft-drink company Canada Dry. More than 1.000 newspaper and advertising executives cheered Watson as he shoveled the, prize money onto a special settle. He exceeded the $15,000 minimum guaranteed him in the first two minutes of the five minutes alloted. He said he would use the money toward earning a college degree in engineering. Watson shoveled the silver hoard with a steady, methodic stroke, but he was breathless and exhausted at the fnish. He said he had be^n practicing at home by shoveling 8,600 dollar-sized metal washers supplied by the company for which he works. The second-prize winner in the drawing, Mrs. Joseph Bradstreet, 32, a chic blonde housewife from Santa Rosa, Calif., scoopejd up •57,700 in two minutes, exceeding ncr guaranteed take by $1,700. She said sh egot her practice "spading worms in the garden.” The third place winner, Mrs. J. M. Tuomy, 43, Louisville, Ky., shoveled $3,150 in one minute. Games, Route 1, Bainbridge, Ind., recently began six months of active military training under the Reserve Forces Act program at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
