Cleveland Kept Cancer A Secret

NEW YORK UP— Out of professional curiosity, cancer specialists would like to know more about the alleged cancer which appeared in the mouth of Grover Cleveland when he was President in 1893 and, according to political and economic historians, threatened the nation with a first class disaster.

rently revived by a popular magazine with the conotation of how times have changed, when only 64 years ago a President could under-go cancer surgery without political Washington or the country as a whole knowning anything about it. Cleveland kept the hap^ning secret for nine years, until he was out of

office.

But present-day cancer experts wonder if it was really cancer, even though the three surgeons and one dentist who performed the secret surgery on a President aboard a yacht cruis- ; ing off Long Island, certainly were convinced that it was. The j doubt is based upon their surgery 1 having b^en superficial by pre- ! :,ent-day standards and by Clevc- ' land having survived it for 19 years and then dying of another

cause.

Cleveland felt secrecy was rnperative because the country was in the throes of a depression and he was the embattled defender of its gold standard which was be-

vernment c purchase of newiy mined silver at a ruinous price. If the news got around, the cause might be lost and, in his opinion, the country would be in worse

trouble.

So on June 30. 1893, he left the White House and went to New York and boarded the yacht without anyone but the few closest to him, being the wiser. Not even the vice president knew. He was Adlai E. Stevenson and he was a silver man. Nor did the cabinet know. The following day the surgeons operated, with their patient propped up in a chair.

According to the account in “The Reader’s Digest”, the President expected to be not only well within a month but to be able to speak vigorously and often with his normal speaking voice. It was an extraordinary assignment for surgeons treating a patient with mouth cancer, and it was even more extraordinary that the surgeons carried it

out.

But the present-day cancer experts were dissatisfied with available detail. The President had been aware of a "roughness" in his mouth for a couple of months. On June 18, a physician had found an ulcer covering onethird ni the mouth’s roof. A tissue examination returned a verdict of cancer. The dentist pulled two teeth from the upper left jaw. The surgeons found “much of the upper left jawbone diseased, the antrum filled with malignancy, and the soft plate of the roof of the mouth affected.” yet they removed no bone and, evidently, not too much tissue. The operation took half an hour, although there was another and lesser one some 10 days later to remove “some further suspicious tissue.” In those days before antibiotics and modren super-sterile surgical techniques, the surgery was completely healed and the President was dominating a special session of Congress six weeks later. He even had been fitted \\*,fh a denture to fill out his facial contour. The experts interviewed by this writer couldn't believe it had been cancer— or if it was both Cleveland and the surgeons were lucky to have t aught it in the very beginning.

With this count to guide him. East knew that he could keep South out of the dummy. East j could refuse tot ake the qWeen of | diamonds and could likewise re- | fuse to take the next diamond. | He could save his ace to kill dummy’s king of diamonds, and South would never be able to win

East might have adopted this plan on the theory that he was aiuitomatically against anything

wanted. East could see that South wanted to

prevent this. Occasionally, however, the defenders should give up their struggle.

that any spade finesse would fail. For this reason, East took the second diamond with his ace. He
