Other pe* ons spread reports among the crowd that mob of whites was going to turn over a Negro’s car and burn it. There were known segregation leaders among the crowds, gathered at the end of barricades across the street in front of the school. At least 50 Little Rock policemen, swinging nightsticks and pistols at their sides, sealed off the whole block around the school and chased away all persons, including working newsi men, and excluding teachers and students, from the block. The situation possessed the most frightening possibilities j for wholesale violence of any since the U. S. Supreme Court ! ordered desegregation of public schools in April, 1954. It had steadily been growing more tense since the night oi Sept. 2, when Gov. Orval Faubus, saying he had reports of hnniinent violence, called out the guard to prevent the school’s in-

Faubus sent the guard hone last Friday night, when U. S. District Judge Ronald N. Davies decided the governor’s fears of violence were groundless and pat him under injunction not to interfere with the school’s inter-
