Forms Insurance Firm For Pooches

NEW YORK anpi Milton M. Weiss, a long, lean native of Manhattan. spent 26 years as a general insurance broker before setting up shop to sell, as the Wall Street Journal said i na headline. ‘'Policies For Pedigreed Pooches.”

One month a?o, New York state approved his rate schedule for dog life insurance in his newly formed Animal Insurance Co. of America, which he says is the first concern anywhere to devote itself exclusively to leading a dog's life into insurance. And what has been the response? ‘‘Staggering," he says •‘We have been just swomped. We can’t keep up with it. We have had inquiries from Germany, Spain. Brazil, Chili, Argentina. Mexico, and from all over the United States and Mexico.”

His company will not sell to persons in foreign countries. It is ! licensed to accept business from brokers in New York state, and it will accept mail applications from anywhere in the continental U. S. and Canada and mail out

the policies.

This opens quite a field. Weiss estimates there are 10 million insurable pedigreed dogs in the United States alone. What’s he got against nonpedigreed mutts? "Nothing.” says Weiss. ‘‘We love ‘em. But we can't determine

Weiss will insure pedigreed dogs from six months to nine years old. The premium rate is 8 per cent annually. To qualify, the dog must first have distemper end hepatitus inoculations.
