Sheinwoid on Oridge Defensive Leads Tell A Story By Alfred Sheinwoid When West led the queen of hearts, South could feel reasonably sure that East held the ace. however, a chance to gain something by playing low. After holding the first trick with the queen of hearts. West wisely shifted to the ten of clubs. Declarer put up the queen from dummy, East covered with the king, and South won with the ace. TRIES HEARTS Declarer was now in danger of losing a club, a heart, and two diamonds. He needed a little luck in one of the red suits, and his best shot was to try for the hearts first. If this failed, he could try his luck in diamonds. With this object in mind. South led a low trump to dummy’s nine and ruffed a low heart with a high trump. He next led another low trump to dummy’s ten and ruffed another low heart with a high trump. Fortunately for South, the ace of hearts fell on this trick. This set up dummy's king of hearts, exactly a« South had hoped. Declarer could easily get to dummy to discard a diamond bn the king of hearts, and now the contract was safe.
