South’s first step w’as to win the opening lead with dummy’s ace. It w’ould be fatal to let the fii*st trick ride around to declar-
er’s owm king.
South’s next move was to take the ace of spades and continue with the queen of spades to draw' tiumpg as quickly as possible. Here again South avoided a pitfall, since a trump finese would
have been fatal.
West w’on the second round of trumps with the king and returned the jack of hearts. East could use his last trump to ruff this trick, but this permitted South to play his low heart. He still had the king of hearts for later use. The defenders could take the ace of clubs sooner or later, but this was only their third trick. The contract was safe.
