Clergy Reported As Discouraged WASHINGTON (UP)—Religious leaders are being forced to reappraise the bright hopes they once held for reaching America s un-churched millions through television and radio. Realistic clergymen admit to growing disappointment with the results of “electronic evangelism.” With a few notable exceptions—such as he programs of Bishop Fulon J. Sheen and Billy Graham’s “Hour of Decision"— audience surveys show that getting people to tune in a religious broadcast is almost as difficult as getting them to attend church. Equally discouraging to churchmen is evidence that religious broadcasts are relatively ineffective in winning converts, even among those who listen to them regularly. One survey of 3^59 families, sponsored by the National Council of Churches, turned up only one person who said he was converted through the direct influence of a television program. Officials of major denominations are now taking a hard second look at the whole field of religious broadcasting, in an effort to find out where the trouble lies. The first conclusion they have reached is that the quality of most religious programs can stand a great deal of improvement. "There has been a tendency to substitute pious intentions for professional skill in producing religious broadcasts,” said one official. “Churches cannot expect to hold their own in the highly competitive struggle for television audiences simply by labelling a broadcast religious and asking people to w-atch it out of a sense of duty.” Hemlines Make Fashion News NEW YORK (UP)—This week in Manhattan: Hemline changes are habitual in fashion. ■When several Paris designers this w^eek showed skirts 17 to 19 inches from the floor, the experts at the Traphagen School of Fashion here scurried to their files on styles since the 1890's. It was around this time, the school reported, that hems began to get off the floor. And they’ve been going up and down ever

since.

The first shorter than floor length skirts w-ere in the Cycling clothes milady wore at the turn of the century. By 1915, how--ever, the instep and ankle were bared in all daytime clothes. In 1916. designers snipped off another inch. Next year, back down went hems to the ankle and by 1918, they had moved upward tw-o to three inches from the

ankle.

From 1920 through 1922, they were the most daring yet—just below the calf. In 1923, they went crawling back to the ankle: in 1924. up to the calf, and by 1925, were all the way to the knee and above. There they stayed until 1929. By 1930 and ’31, Traphag®n said, they were down again to nine or 10 inches from the floor, and then each year inched up until by 1940 they were back to th“

knee.

Wartime restrictions on fabrics kept skirts shore until 1947. when Christian Dior in Paris launched the “new look” and the rest of j

the Mfeion world fall in line., That season, some ekirta dropped to eight inches from the floor. Then they moderated again and settled pretty much at mid-calf. A year and a half ago. Dior experimented again with the “demilongeur," or hem nearly to the ankle, but it didn't catch on.
